DIRECTV Transponder Map: Data of 10/13/09
The attachments to this post cover all DIRECTV Channels and Transponders, both CONUS (Continental US or National beams) and LIL (Local Into Local or Spot beams).
Two PDF documents provide the CONUS data for DIRECTV Satellites at the 72.5W, 95W, 99W, 101W, 103W, 110W and 119W positions, sorted two ways; this data is updated monthly:
- A full listing in Network Number sequence
- A full listing in Channel Name sequence
Two other documents provide the OTA (over-the-air) and LIL (local-into-local) data. These files are somewhat static and are not always updated every month. These files are:
- LIL-------Updated and current as of 10/13/09
- OTA------Not Updated This Month - Current as of 8/15/09
Three supplemental documents are also provided:
- A Network-Market-DMA Networklist cross-reference sheet. This information is particularly useful in understanding the LIL data. This document has just been updated with the 2010 DMA rank assignments by Nielsen.
- A Network Decoder map showing the satellites and transponders graphically as they appear on your receiver's signal strength display.
- And for those of you who prefer to work with the data in Excel, a file conus_rollyourown.xls is provided.
All documents are fully unprotected so you may copy and use the data as you wish.

Please -- don't forget to thank 'doctorj' the dbstalk member that captures all this data for us!
The applause is deserved!

Chew on This:
As a part of assembling the TPN maps, I started tracking how many channels of what types (CONUS or LIL) were 'loaded out' to each of the satellites. The attached table shows those results.
In particular, note the (lack of) LIL load on SW1 .....
Please remember, there is a whole world DIRECTV programming pointed to Mexico/Central America/South America. We haven't figured out how to capture that data yet. Thay MAY be the load for SW1, but who knows??
There is obviously a whole lot of activity going on....

Yep, decreased load on SW1 expected, with D12 taking over most of SW1's Ka-Hi frequency range.
Thanks for the summary chart.

First off, thanks again guys!
As I recall, sw1 doesn't use all of the KA HI spectrum DIrectv has.. IN fact, I thought it only used half of it...
TO speculate, I wonder if we will see that bird get moved to sit next to SW2 and then combine with it for more lil, or if we will see them reconfigure sw1 to use tighter and more specialized spot beams, and need less overall bandwidth, but still broadcast a full slate of lil stations... I didn't realize that D12 would really cut into sw1's bandwidth, I thought there was plenty of room for both....
Of course, they could have something completely new coming soon that they are going ot use sw1 for...
Should be interesting to see what sw1 is doing a year form now...

Ka-Hi at 103° is 19.7GHz-20.2GHz.
500MHz with LHCP, and 500MHz with RHCP.
Effective total of 1000MHz (1GHz).
In the future, D12 will use 19.89GHz-20.2GHz of the Ka-Hi frequency range at 103°.
64% of the "old" SW1 frequency range.
D12's 16 new national transponders are each 36Mhz + 4MHz spacing. 16 transponders x 40MHz = 640MHz.

Just a note of clarification to your calculations:
If explained this way I suppose it would be better to refer to the Ka-hi band and DIRECTV-12's total CONUS transponder bandwidth of 1000 MHz and 640 MHz respectively as their "effective" bandwidths, since the Ka-hi band like it's lo-band counterpart is actually only 500 MHz wide.
But as one can see from the chart above the transponders are grouped into pairs and assigned the same center frequency for a total of 8 cross-polarized pairs for an actual bandwidth of 320 MHz.

I thought I remembered that D12 would be taking over LIL duties from D10 as opposed to SW1.

D12 LiL will use the 103° Ka-Lo frequency range. Same/Sharing with D10.

New HD Markets
One interesting observation has been the new markets and "test" status prior to going "Live".
Directv has announced 4 new(completely new ie. no prior sd channels) markets here:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...setId=P6030044
These markets:
Marquette MI- Net #630
Minot/Bismark ND- Net #637
Missoula MT- Net #638
Sherman TX Ada OK Net #684
Do not show active in any fashion as of 10/13/09.
Beckley/Bluefield WV and Jackson MS were active in "TEST" mode several weeks/months prior to going live.
I'm planning to check weekly to see when / if these markets show in the PID data stream prior to their launch. Since no activity so far I suspect NOV 2009 as announced is "Late Nov."

Doctor j, You deserve a big THANK YOU for all of your efforts to collect the data.
And gct for summarizing.
I certainly understand the behind the scenes effort that this all takes.

For what it's worth, the Huntsville HD LiLs went live at the end of last month, and I scanned through last month's transponder map data and didn't see any test channels at that time.
On a somewhat related note, I noticed quite a few new LiL HD test channels from markets that were already launched that weren't up last month.
Oh, and I'd also like to add my thanks for collecting this data. It is very much appreciated!

Thanks for the data. Much appreciated!
As a nosy engineering type, can I ask how the data is compiled. Curiosity more than anything.
Again, thanks. Makes troubleshooting much easier when you know where to look for a SFSS signal problem.

Updated LIL Data
With all the recent interest in LIL data, I have updated Post #1 with an updated Excel spreadsheet attachment reflecting all the LIL data as of 10/22/09.
As always, thanks to to 'doctor j' for providing capture data.
