I suspect there is more to this story.

The sudden nature of the announcement lends itself to speculation.

The article I read Charlie will be Chairman. Charlie isn't leaving.

Some one just mentioned anyone who bought DISH stocks today will not get the $2 special dividend, so the stock price reflects the $2 discount.

Another speculation is, Charlie not the CEO of E* might make it easier for E* and TiVo to work out a deal together. They are both DVR hardware makers, E* holds Sling IP, TiVo hold its own DVR IP. The two together will benefit both, and of course also benefit DISH since DISH will be the DVR markers' main buyer. Pure speculation though.

So you're saying that the pressure of the Tivo lawsuit was too much for Charlie? TiVo stock is up today.

All the payments to Tivo come from Dish Network, not Echostar. Charile will still be making all those day-to-day decisions important to subscribers. It's probably difficult for the average investor or even the institutional investors to really understand the 2008 spinoff structure. I keep reminding folks elsewhere that Dish Network hasn't been Echostar for nearly two years.

This will make it much easier for EchoStar to make agreements with other providers, than just Dish for thier DVR's.

AT CES the ViP922 had been proposed as a DVR to other carriers like Cable companies. With Charlie out of the day to day functions at EchoStar, it will make it much easier, for EchoStar, to make agreements.
Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a requirement of sorts, from some other carrier, that Charlie be out of the Day to Day stuff, before agreements would be signed, for the Hardware. No carrier will have to worry about making sure Dish gets something in return from them, to carry the EchoStar Hardware.

Both DISH and E*, and many other Charlie's companies are co-defendants in this TiVo lawsuit.

The latest news since the quarterly call point to the possibility that Charlie does not see him making any more payment to TiVo.

They may be co-defendants, but the payments to TiVo and other expenses are shown in the Dish Network 10-K's.

Yeah, I've seen that but until I read about a settlement or a last and final and complete ruling by all the courts involved.

Doesn't seem to hurt DISH much.

I think the next appeals court ruling should be enough.

There is an entire thread on the Tivo Vs Dish.
Charlie stepping down, just frees up EchoStar, and completes the seperation started in 2008 of Dish and EchoStar as 2 seperate Companies.
EchoStar will be free to have more agreements, with different carriers.

If any potential clients think Charlie not being the CEO will make them more likely to benefit from E*, they are somewhat out of their mind.

But if you say Charlie removing himself in the hope E* may appeal more to any potential clients, then I can see your point, but I'd say it is Charlie's wishful thinking

Except for the 10 call centers they have here in the US. BBB is a joke of which anyone under the age of 45 doesn't pay attention to anymore, and the charlie chats are exactly what they advertise to be.

Reminder to please stay on topic... This is not a Tivo vs Echostar thread. There is another thread for that.

Okay...
Echostar=hardware (set top boxes, satellites, etc)
Dish Network=programming (who you pay your monthly bill to) and what Charlie Chat derives from

Charlie is stepping down as CEO of Echostar but will remain as Chairman, nothing changed with Dish Network

This brings back Mike Dugan to an active position in the company which is a VERY good move. Charlie will still be the boss over the whole thing, so I don't know how much this will help in the sales end of things, but the technical side will be in very good hands.
