TiVo w/ Lifetime Sub & Dish 4700

Philips 30 hour TiVo: Includes Lifetime subscription and is grandfathered for the toll free dial-in service. I am asking $399.

I have a Best Buy extended warranty on the TiVo that expires 2/14/04. I don't know if it is transferrable. If the TiVo requires exchange and they won't honor for you, you could ship to me and I would exchange it and then ship back (at your cost of course).

Dish 4700 Receiver: Standard 4700 receiver upgraded to OpenTV (4900 software). I am asking $75.

I would sell both for $435 plus shipping ($30?)

I also have a wireless phone jack system I bought from TiVo that I used for the system. $40 if you are interested.

Is the Tivo Lifetime Subscription transferrable from one person to another?

Jacob,

Yes, the Lifetime Subscription is for the machine, not the individual.

I sent you an email with additional information. Thank you for your response to my ad.

How old is the unit? Can you still use the unit if you do not use a phone line?

The unit is 1 1/2 years old, purchased Feb 2001. The phone line is required to use the TiVo functions, as the daily calls obtain the guide listings. The unit can be used without making the daily calls, but only for manual recording and with that you would get a lot of nag messages that tell you that guide data is low.

Since the unit has a lifetime subscription and is grandfathered for the toll free daily calls, I don't know why you would not use it connected to the phone line, unless you don't have a telephone. The calls by TiVo are very friendly. If TiVo is on the phone and you pick up a line, TiVo releases the line. The calls generally are after 10pm. In fact, TiVo does not call out during evening hours, 6-10pm. Jacob...email me with more questions or send you phone number by emai and we can talk

The issue that I have is that if I would not want to connect a phone line up to it or travel with it where I dont have a phone line, and the main thing I worry about, is if the company goes out of business I would be out of a toll free phone call to dial through and the some problems with the unit as a result. Is it 30 hours in best time or only 10 hours in best time and 20 hours in a medium grade? If the unit goes bad you cannot transfer the lifetime subscription to another unit can you? Can you get an extended warranty on it?

Jacob,

If you don't use a phone line you would not receive the full benefit of TiVo. The 30 hours is for the lowest quality record. I used the medium setting and got around 20 hours on it. I have an extended warranty for the unit. If TiVo goes out of business, the issue of a daily call won't be an issue. If there isn't a TiVo company for the machine to call, the issue of a toll free or toll call is moot. The Lifetime Subcription is for the machine. If it goes bad, the extended warranty that I have will allow for transfer of the subscription to the replacement machine. However, after the warranty has expired in 02/04, a replacement unit would not have th sub. I might add, however, that there are private companies that provide repair service for TiVo and TiVo provides repair too, which would allow for continued service for the box.

You may want to go to tivocommunity.com and read some of the FAQ and other threads for more detailed information. TiVo.com has some information and a demonstration on line.
