You're going to see quite a bit of this for some time, I imagine, especially on cartoons. I don't suspect many are made in HD format.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm very disappointed that the channel is stretch-o-vision.

I saw on the line up this morning as my kids love the CN. Switching back and forth form HD to normal ch and there is a noticable difference in quality.

No, they can show them 4:3 in the middle of the screen and take advantage of the increased resolution.
Many cartoons, features and shorts, that were created for theatres are widescreen. Hopefully those will be shown correctly.
As far as why this channel instead of some other, we really don't know the reason for the order of any of the added channels, do we?

Yes indeed Stretch o Vision is rough and anticipate that for many of the modern animations.
However, the old film animation cells should be awesome. Classic Bugs Bunny and such would be great.
Having said that I have no idea about Cartoon network's access and ability to do an HD version of them.
In our house we primarily watch the classics and Futurama and actually probably watch more Flintstones and Scooby Doo on Boomerang.
In the end more HD is more HD!

I would rather have this channel than Food Network HD though. But any channel going HD is good to me, even if I don't watch it.
As for the stretching, I can't stand it on any regular channels but it just doesn't bother me that much on cartoons. I guess because they are not real people but animated characters I don't care that much if they look a little fatter or shorter. |

No offense taken here for sure! I watched the CN a while back with my son who was 7 at the time and I could not believe the stuff I saw on some of the shows. I wound up blocking that channel on all receivers because quite frankly, some of the stuff he watched was just terrible and more for adults rather than small kids.
So CN in HD? For me, no big deal! |

The CNHD uses a modified Stretch-O-Vision. The center is normal while it gradually stretches horizontally the further out it gets. Looks a little strange when the picture pans horizontally.

Other than 16:9 aspect I really don't see why this network is in HD. Animation is just blocks of color. I don't see how most of their programming would take advantage of the increased resolution....

Yes, that is typically called "Panorama Stretch" ...if there is a scrolling text line (as in MSNBC), it can be as disorienting as being in a "fun house" of mirrors as the "apparent" font of the text scroll changes by position on the screen.
For a lot of programming it is a good stretch mode, however. Instead of getting an oblong circle in the center of the screen (or a fat face), the middle of the screen is not stretched and the "less obvious" portions near the edge are. It's a clever idea, but can be quite disconcerting depending on content.

Even the classic WB cartoons were aimed at adults, although you must be familiar with old time radio programs and 1940s politics to appreciate a lot of the jokes today.
Cartoons have never been aimed solely at children.

we always streched CN at our house. I'm thinking the picture quality will increase even though the source content is not HD. I will see when I go home for lunch.

Yep, if you've ever seen them (now removed by our wonderful Gov't. sensoring for PC) there are old Bugs Bunny cartoons that were VERY political propaganda types.
1. Bug Bunny fighting the Japanese, "Bugs Bunny vs. The Japs" (close to actual title)
2. Bugs Bunny fighting the Nazi's (I don't recall the name)
I have these in Divx from Ebay, I could not believe some of the content on the Japanese episode! |

naaah, im definately digging that they did CN. Yeah im a fully grown old fart adult. But that doesnt mean i dont enjoy Futurama or Tom and Jerry occaisonally. And when i was just looking at it, it was hard to tell if it was stretch-o-vision. I recall the first time i saw that for myself was for a long time on TBS, which i mostly used to watch for reruns of NYPD blue. You could actually see an invisable line where there would sometimes be a distortion caused by the stretching. I must say these new channels the "stretching" is a HELLUVA lot more subtle. I havent seen that affect yet. Granted they arent all as good as Smithsonian or CNN (which i think looks awesome), but theyre still much better to my eye than old TBS was.
Maybe its a diff in MPEG2 VS MPEG4...???????? Im not sure, or if its broadcast side how they/if they upconvert to an HD signal something like NYPD blue, but that was my one example of really REALLY bad stretch-o-vision

Are you sure your son wasn't watching Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. It's a block of shows late at night (I think starting at 11pm ET) that has many M-rated and TV-14 rated shows.
Your better bet that just outright block a channel is to block shows by rating level on your DirecTV receiver. There's no reason Tom & Jerry can't be watched, but that stops the Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Frisky Dingo's from being viewed.
This is just a guess - maybe he was watching some run of the mill cartoon that was offensive. |
