I have my old HR10-250 in my son's room that he has been bugging me to upgrade so that he can get the new HD channels. I upgraded to an HR20 for my family room back in January and have been quite happy with it. My only issue is that it is inside a cabinet and generates quite a bit of heat. I called Directv today and they offered me the $99 swap for a new HD DVR. My only question is do I want a 20 or 21? From what I have read the 21 is the same as the 20 except it is black, has a little more storage, does not have VOD yet, runs a little cooler due to an internal fan and lacks OTA antenna's. It seems like that is my best option since I get all the locals here in South Florida thru DTV. I also have read that the HR-21 might get future OTA thru USB but I am not sure how that will work since I use coax now. And apparently VOD is in the future also. So is the HR21 the DVR of choice if OTA is not a necessity?

Ultimately; HR20 - ATSC = HR21

So whats the point in building the 21? If there is a point, why build it without ATSC.

Lower manufacturing cost. See other threads discussing this.

If someone needed OTA and was looking for a HR20 what would be the better version - 100 or 700?

I do not think it matters. Though a purist may say the 700.

700 was the first produced, whereas 100 was a little later.
700 is whats still being beta tested, than when "perfection" arrives its tweaked for the 100.

I personally am running out to costco to pick up a 700 because I want to be part of the CE, however, it doesn't honestly matter.
I believe the 700's also use external RF antenna's. Whereas the 100's have them built in, however someone else will need to confrim it.

This is 100% true.

As of right now the 700 model has a really sweet RF setup for the remote. The 100 which uses the external RF antenna does not work good at all, actually REALLY bad. But supposedly they are working on a software update to fix that.

The 100 has coaxial digital audio output which the 700 doesn't. That for me is a significant difference and one for which I am glad I have the 100. The 100 is also a "cleaner" internal design than the 700 with newer-designed components.

You don't have a choice unless you buy at retail anyway, and then you won't get the offer it will be $299. They will more than likely ship an HR21-700 that is basically an HR20-700 with no OTA and is black. They both have the same recording capacity. HR21-700 also has a built in RF antenna. Also the HR21-700 has both coaxial and optical digital audio outputs.

Actually it's not... He said "I believe the 700's also use external RF antenna's. Whereas the 100's have them built in". That's actually opposite of what it is. The 700 has an internal RF antenna and the 100's is external.

The biggest difference between the HR20 and the HR21 is that the HR21 does not have the ability to receive over-the-air broadcasts from your local television stations built into the receiver. The HR20 does.

So which rf remote works better - the 700 internal or the 100 external? Is the coaxial digital audio output something I’ll need in the future or something now? Maybe this isn’t the place to ask but do the HR20s output 7.1?

Whether you need coaxial digital audio depends on what you run it to. In my case, I had no optical audio inputs available but did have coax.

As for 7.1, as far as I know these boxes just send whatever the Dolby Digital bitstream is that comes down the satellite. I don't think DirecTV is using any formats that include 7.1.

Nope. 5.1

No one is broadcasting 7.1

700 internal by a landslide.

A few CE's ago I would have said the 700 had better RF hands down. But you can tell they've been working on the RF for the 100 and it's much better now.

Not sure about 7.1 but it does output 6.1. My local ABC affiliate broadcasts in 6.1. I would think Optical or Coax would carry whatever is broadcast.

Not so much anymore really.

I have a 700 and a 100 in my bedroom. Using RF on both I get comparable results these days. They've clearly been working on the RF for the 100.

Does anyone have an idea (approximation) as to when VOD will come for the HR21.
Thanks

Is it weeks away, or months away?
