I've been a Dish Network customer for about seven years. For the last two years I have been using a ViP622 receiver. I am finally fed up with it. I have gone through FIVE of these receivers in the last two years! Since Feb. I have had three. All of them except one have had the infamous HDMI failure. The one odd ball was a refurb replacement that was DOA. My current 622 first lost the HD component output within a couple weeks after getting it, then the HDMI went out on it a couple weeks after that. I have been forced to use s-video. I am so fed up that instead of calling tech support again to have them ship me reciever number 6 I called customer service and cancelled my service. When the CS agent asked my why I was canceling I told her it was due to chronic equipement unreliability. She made no attempt to change my mind. BTW, I wasn't rude to her. It wasn't her fault.

I have been looking at Directv. They have more HD channels now and I can get nearly the same channel package for about $15 cheaper per month. I'm so freakin' frustrated at all this though I've decided to go on a TV hunger strike! Let's see how long I last. :eek2:

Goodbye sir. Hope your next experience is more pleasing for you. Not sure why you had so many issues with your 622, mine has been flawless.

If #5 arrived DOA, how are you sure it didn't suffer 'the infamous HDMI failure', too.

(sorry I couldn't resist)

In all seriousness, here. After the failure of replacement #2, I would have demanded a different model receiver. OTOH: Maybe there should be a 'lemon law' that applies to consumer goods other than automobiles.

I'm slightly confused by your choice of emphasis here... you emphasized that you have had five receivers in the last two years... but then, almost as an afterthought, note that 3 of them have been since Feb. Personally, the three since Feb would have been where I would have placed the emphasis.

While failure is not to be expected... the 2 in the first 1.75 or so years doesn't sound that bad as it means 1 bad receiver replaced once... It is the 3 replacements in the last 3 months that would be of most concern to me.

Dish Customer 8+ years 622 receiver since 0ct. 2006. No problems and my HDMI has never failed. Component looks as good anyway. Goodbye Bark and have a nice night.

Could be all the 622s placed into microwave oven these years ? :) Or overcooked by heat from other A/V gear ?

If your HD component just went out on this one, why didn't you use the component output on the other 4? Also, did you have your receiver hooked up using both HDMI and component? (it seems odd that after 4 other receivers with bad HDMI outputs, that you noticed the component output going bad first on this one...I would think that once you got your 5th one with a working HDMI, that you would be using it and not component).

I also have a 622 that has a failed HDMI output, since my kids have a ton of recordings that we don't want to lose, I just hooked it up via component and it works great. I understand wanting to use HDMI (as that was what I originally wanted as well), but after the 2nd & 3rd one still having a bad HDMI (which is a known problem), why not just hook it up via component and watch HD that way (probably would have saved yourself a lot of headaches :) ). I realize it does vary by customer/equipment, but for the most part there is not that much difference between HDMI & component from a picture quality standpoint (at least not enough to make me go through 5 receivers...).

I left Dish several months ago for FiOS/Tivo. The 622 is the only thing I miss. I did have some overheating issues with the 622 which I attributed to a PS3 sitting on top of the 622. I changed the setup to allow better ventilation and had no issues afterwards.

Component has always worked best for me. No HDCP handshake problems.
Anthem, Conrad Johnson, Dish Network/JVC, Dynaudio, Infinity, Integra, JL Audio, Klipsch, Magnepan, Marantz, Martin Logan, Onkyo, Oppo, Outlaw Audio, Panasonic, Paradigm, REL, Sumiko, SVSound, and Toshiba are the brands equipment I currently use. I have owned/used and tested equipment made by just about any manufacturer you can name.

Not really... In this case it makes me doubt the sincerity and question the motive of the original post. It makes it appear as if the original poster is trying to exaggerate the situation rather than posting in real anger about his experience... which in turn makes me wonder if he is posting all the info about his experience. For all we know his multiple failures are actually being caused by something in his configuration that is not the fault of Dish.

May I suggest you call DISH back and ask for a retention specialist, explain the problem with the receivers and see if they can help you? DISH added 22 HD channels so that argument about DTV having more is no longer valid. I HAVE both DTV and DISH in HD for 6 months of the year, due to needing the MLB EI package. As soon as baseball season ends, we suspend the account. Why you ask?

The DTV HD receiver is horrible. Well really, all of the receivers I have had with them are horrible. They respond slowly, the menus are not intuitive, the remote is not user friendly...I could go on and on. The 622 blows the HR 21 out of the water and again, I have both of them. The color on the DTV is always duller than the DISH picture.

Please Mike, do yourself a huge favor and get back in good graces with DISH.

Agree. Far too often I find that Display or AV Component manufacturers are not fully within the hardware specs of certain transport mediums. It is possible, something in his configuration, like his display, was not establishing an HDMI EDID handshake, or perhaps his display had a faulty HDMI connector and in turn fried his receiver's HDMI port... or vice versa.

It is an industry known problem, that the early HDMI connectors were flimsy and could break fairly easily. That's why most manufacturers, including E*... per a previous Tech Chat.... switched to Thru-Hole HDMI connectors instead of Surface Mount connectors.

It looked like Dish was going to catch D* this week in HD, but then 10 Voom channels were dropped last night. Furthermore, D* is going to be doing another HD expansion, both local and national, when D11 goes live in another month or so.

If I had a hammer and it bent the nail every time I hit it and I replaced that hammer 3 or 4 times and all of those hammers bent the nails, I might start looking at the nails. I might get hammer swinging lessons. I don't know, did you check your HDMI cable? Was excessive stress placed on the cable near the reciever (i.e. a tight fit in the back of your etertainment center)?

And I see Dish has put up a “Ra, Ra” marquee on 9472 (which until yesterday was the Voom Gallery channel,) bestowing the virtues of the all-new twenty-two – though I haven’t seen any “Ra, Ra” marquees (or obituaries) listing the ten (so far) Voom channels they have elected to drop… :rolleyes:

Now, if my math abilities still serve me correctly, that means (as it currently stands) an actual net gain of 12 HD channels – some of which, I believe are only available to upper-tier and/or movie package subscribers. ;)

Well... I see that all the Vooms are gone now... :rolleyes: Hey -- Here's an idea (and a great cost cutter to boot) -- substitute all normal HD programming with "Charlie Chats" in full 5.1 HD running 24/7/365 -- who could ask for anything more than that? :lol:
