I guess game lounge would be good for the non-tech savvy, but I can't imagine paying $72 bucks a year for very basic gaming that I get for free elsewhere.

I generally refrain from commenting on stuff I'm not interested in, but I really don't understand the market for this. They need to get way more savvy about what makes a game compelling and create something addictive (ala WOW or webkinz?) to garner some real devoted subscribers. Wasting time on things like Monopoly or Yahtzee on a subscription service just shows how little they understand how to compete in the gaming market.

I suspect, this is a classic vision without commitment situation. D* sees the box as a general home entertainment console but they don't have the buyin or resources to really make the gaming aspect succeed. Sony has the same console vision for the PS3. But the delivery of that vision is so much more professional on the PS3, it's seems clear to me that they are committed to every feature they have developed.

The only thing I can see this is good for business-wise, is that it's another line item they can stick to the affluent consumers who don't look at their bill. If there is anyone here who has Game Lounge and feels they are getting their money's worth I would love to hear why and be proven wrong.

Personally I don't use it and probably never will (even during the free preview). I'm not a gamer. But I don't think this is directed at gamers. I think it's directed at mom and pop and grandmom and grandpop who have never and never will touch a PS3 in their lives. They think X-Box is a dirty word.

I also don't know much about gaming and what it requires, but wouldn't it be impossible for DirecTV to provide gaming content up to par with a full-computer or dedicated gaming console in the hardware they have? Additionally, I think it would be foolhardy to ramp up the current hardware to those levels as well.

You're probably right about the level of complexity they can achieve, but there are things like webkinz that have a pretty simple interface and little kids find it addictive. The key to keeping people paying a subscription is to provide something that they want to keep coming back for. Might they come back for Yahtzee? Maybe a few in the groups you suggested, but boy that seems like a narrow market.

When you can get those "101 Games" CD-ROMs with much superior game play at Walmart for $3-$5, I just can see a lot of people paying $60-$70 per year of this handful of pitiful games.

I wouldn't be surprised if DirecTV decided to go with an ad driven, free to the end user model.

How about you DirecTV subscribers try out some of the games during the preview, and then give us your reviews of how great/pitiful they are. :D

Ok, so I lied in my post above; I did end up checking out the bowling game. Wow, it was horribly slow. I don't know how people (anyone, gamers and non-gamers alike) can sit and wait for this to load and wait so long in between pageloads. A terrible waste, you guys are right. :nono2:

After trying out a few of these games I am shocked that anyone would ever pay for this Game Lounge service. Terrible games and agonizingly slow.

Shoving bamboo shoots under my fingernails would be less painful than Game Lounge. It could be used as an "enhanced interrogation" technique. No, wait, Lame Gouge is just too inhuman.

You lie! I clearly saw man_rob with a high score of 1000000000

Seriously, who would even play this crap for free?

I think it's funny how they keep running the Pat Sajak ad mentioning "all the great casino games" yet half of them are only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Guess I should have tried this out yesterday...and why are they limited anyway??

This game lounge thing is a PITA! I play a round of 'Rock in a Hard Place' and I choose the 'Play Again' option and it doesn't load and then I lose video on channels 100-115 and have to reset my receiver. It's a good thing I'd never consider subscribing to this because if that's how it would be every time I played then I'd be quite a disappointed customer!

You said it. I tried the bowling game, too, and it was a joke.

But I've "bowled" with the Wii, so maybe it's unfair for me to judge.

Yeah, this must be for the 1 percent of the population that never get off the couch and doesn't realize there is an internet full of free games.
