MPTV Relocates Digital Channels
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Several digital channels offered by Milwaukee Public Television, including its high definition simulcast of MPTV-10, will move to new locations beginning Monday, Sept. 1, at 12:01 a.m.

Viewers who receive their digital TV signal over the air will find MPTV-HD, the high definition channel, at 10.1. It will provide a simulcast of the programs on MPTV-10, one of the two analog channels operated by Milwaukee's public television station.

A digital version of MPTV-36, the other analog channel, will be available on 36.1, but it will not be high definition. Both analog stations will continue to present their regular programming until Feb. 17. On that date, television stations are required to begin broadcasting in the digital format.

"The new MPTV digital line-up is more logical," said Tom Dvorak, MPTV's Director of Broadcasting. "When everything changes in February, it will make it easier for viewers to find their favorite programs."

MPTV offers several other digital stations, including MPTV Create, which presents cooking, gardening, travel and other lifestyle programming; V-me, a Spanish language mix of education and entertainment; and MPTV World, providing public affairs coverage and documentaries.

V-me will be 36.2, MPTV World will be 36.3, and MPTV Create will be 36.4. These channels, as well as 10.1 and 36.1, also are available on some cable systems. Viewers should consult their cable guides to find the locations.
MPTV also offers two digital music channels, MPTV Classical 36.5, MPTV Jazz 36.6 and two informational channels MPTV Weather 36.7 and MPTV Traffic 36.8.

MPTV KIDS, on digital channel 10.3 and Time Warner Cable channel 552 on Time Warner Cable, will end. The same day, the weekday schedule of children's programs on MPTV-10-HD and MPTV-10 will expand to 13 hours, from 5 a.m.-6 p.m.

MPTV KIDS began as a pre-packaged service from PBS, a 24-hours children's channel. Three years ago,
PBS stopped offering that service to stations. At that time, MPTV made the decision to continue running
the channel using a back-up feed of PBS programming and repeating it every 12 hours. PBS is now eliminating that back-up feed so they can transmit more and more programs in high definition, which requires the use of greater bandwidth. Therefore, MPTV can no longer offer a 24-hour children's channel.

OK, you guys got MOST of it right today. But, on my H20-100 I get 2 36-3's and 2 36-4's. The first 36-3 and 36-4 doesn't work so please remove it.

I recently installed an OTA antenna and hooked up an AM21 receiver to my HR21 receiver. I did this because DirecTV doesn't carry my local CBS station (Channel 58 in Milwaukee) in HD.

The main feed is channel 58-1, and even though the signal meter shows 100% signal for this channel, I get the "771 searching for signal" error when I try to tune in.

The odd thing is that the subchannels (i.e. 58-2, 58-3, etc.) all come in just fine, so between that and the signal meter, and the fact that I get all the other OTA channels, I know I have everything set up properly.

I've tried resetting and rebuilding my antenna settings to no avail.

A related problem I've noticed: When I populate the channels, two entries for 58-1 appear. There's a WDJT-DT (expected) and a WMLW-DT (not expected).

I'm guessing two stations can't occupy the same channel number. Is this a problem on DirecTV's end or on the station's end? (Or my end?)

Any ideas?

Well, WMLW is supposed to be 58-2, not 58-1. I see that here too. Also, WMVS is supposed to have only 2 subchannels now... 10-1 and 10-2. So, that also needs to be fixed.

To be more clear:

The D* EPG/Tribune data is wrong.

KFQX-DT is listed incorrectly as virtual 15.1, it should be listed as 4.1 (the RF channel is 15, however).

Issue: The channel appears twice...once as "KCWIDT" and once as "KDMIDT2." Both channels get the "Searching for signal on the off-air tuner (771)" error. I can tune to channel 23.1 just fine using my TV's internal tuner, but not with the HR-20. The HR-20 had no problems with this channel until just a few days ago.

I don't have an AM21 but I do watch all the Milwaukee subchannels via a DTV converter box. (Sniff-can't record them!!)

58.1 is the main CBS feed, 58.2 is a feed from low power analog WMLW (OTA RF channel 41) which IS carried on the 101 as ML41. (No OTA feed required) 58.3 is ME-TV, a local subchannel of old TV shows. It can also be received on analog FULL POWER OTA station WBME on RF channel 49. Sadly, ME-TV is not carried by DirecTV as a local.

All of the subchannels appear correctly on my DTV converter box so I'd check your AM21 setup. (Or complain to DTV) :D

Last week WEYI (NBC 25 Flint/Saginaw MI) stopped using subchannel 25.2 for CW, and it is now an SD feed of their primary NBC feed.

The guide data is correct.

Satellite local 14 (WBSF CW Flint/Saginaw) - which is really channel 46 OTA, now has incorrect guide data, and is showing the data for 25.2

I believe D* had it set to use the 25.2 guide data for channel 14 (which used to be correct until this change).

To fix it, you'll need to use the WBSF data, analog channel 46. WBSF does not have a digital assignment, and will do a live cut-switch on 2/17/09.

Much appreciation if you can fix the guide data!

More info in the digital television section of this page:
