Cubs and White Sox announced yet how many games will be on WGN this year? I really, really, really, hope Directv has WGN America HD by April.

The Cubs have historically announced their TV schedule in late Feb or early March.

At this point it sounds like the only way this will show up on directv is if WGN lets its be carried for free.

Comcast Sports Chicago announced today they would have 80 Cubs game so if you take away approx. 12 games that will be on Fox and ESPN Sunday night that leaves about 70 Cubs games on WGN this year. Plus another 55 or so White Sox games. So about 125 total.

I REALLY hope Directv has WGN America HD by opening day! Course I've been saying that for 2 seasons now. Probably have to watch WGN SD again this year which the picture clarity is god awful even compared to other SD stations.

There are going to be 25 games on WCIU.

No games on the MLB Network - they have No live broadcast rights for any games of any teams.

I wish the Cubs would move all of their games to Comcast Sportsnet Chicago. WGN was the way to watch them back in the day but WGN isn't even carried by DirecTv in HD yet and Dish Network has had this channel since last year. I also wish the Cubs would stop having games on WCIU. That throws every Cubs fan in the nation out of whack when the Cubs have a WCIU game. We can't see the game.

I'd be all for all the games on CSN Chicago. I think it might eventually happen. Wouldn't shock me if Cubs start-up their own network someday though either. Also be nice to get rid of the WCIU games for the non local area people.

MLB Network will broadcast 26 regular season games during the '09 season. ;) :)

http://mlb.mlb.com/network/about/

Scroll down that page to the Programming section.
They don't specify which games or when, but they do confirm 26 live regular season games.

Steve

The Person who said there would be no Live MLB Games on the MLB Network does not know what the hell they are talking about. MLB Network Will be carrying Live games this year. They will be having 1 Live game a week and they will also have Live Look In's Nightly from what I understand and there will be "Whip Arounds" of ALL The Games every single night.

While our pain was bad, it was nothing compared to that of the Cubs. The Sox have had plenty of positive playoff experiences since 1908. They, of course, all ended in misery until 2004, but at least we had them. The Cubs.....not so much.

You're right though. Things are very different since 2004. I am not suicidal this morning, so that's definitely a step in the right direction.

How on earth are you a Red Sox fan living in New York? I'm not a fan of the Sox or the Yankees...but find this amusing.

Nice to see so many games on WGN, too bad I'll be watching them in SD unless DirecTV gets on the stick but I'm not holding out hope that it will happen.

See post My Setup for configuration info.

I thought Tribune/Cubs already own about 25% of CSN Chicago. Isn't that part of the deal Zell is offering (Cubs/Wrigley/Chunk of CSN Chicago)?

I hope for HD this season as the picture quality on WGN for Cubs games is absolutely wretched

Yes it is, WGN America has to be one of the worst Standard Definition channels Directv has in terms of picture quality. It's god awful.

Looks like it's not gonna happen. I think we would have heard by now.

The PQ on WGN is an embarrassment to DirecTV.

WCIU pays a lot of money to carry these games, unless they decide to stop WCIU will get to show games.

There are only going to be eight games on WCIU this year. WGN will have 60.

And WCIU pays a lot of money to carry these games. The only thing that makes WCIU relevant in Chicago is their local sports coverage.

I'm sure they pay well for the rights. But didn't you predict that there wouldn't be any Cubs games on WGN by this year? There are less than there used to be, but 60 still comprises more than a third of the entire season.

I predicted that new ownership would begin the process of removing games completely from WGN and moving them to CSN unless WGN paid up. Tribune has never stated what amount WGN pays to televise cub games but you can be sure that once tribune is no longer the owner of the cubs they wont be able to get away with that. Point being, the new owners will have no reason to do WGN any favors. If WGN wants to may market price they may get to keep televising games.

In October 2007, you wrote: "The cubs have not even announced their TV schedule for next year. There is a very good chance that with new ownership they wont have any game on tribune TV(WGN) next year." You went on to predict that John Canning would be the new owner. I agree that it's likely that WGN will have to pay more for the broadcast rights after the ownership change, but continuing the relationship would seem to be in the best interests of both the Cubs and WGN. The White Sox have never been owned by WGN, but a significant number of Sox games continue to be broadcast on WGN.

At the time everyone thought that the cubs would have a new owner a long time ago and that it would be John Canning, including John, Bud Selig and you. Sam Zell certainly didn't want to own the cubs this long.

Since the cubs are still under tribune ownership it is impossible to know how many games will be on WGN going forward. I agree that the relationship with WGN will continue if the price is right, that is why WGN shows Sox games, WGN pays market price for these games.

The new owner is going to pay a lot of money for the cubs with limited ways to increase revenue. It is doubtful they will leave money on the table just to continue a relationship with WGN.
