I'm resistant to change. I have an old Directv Tivo DVR (not HD) and an HD Receiver (not DVR) on my HDTV.

My TiVo is starting to act funny. I had a family friend who gave me her old HD-10 250, but I haven't called to see if they will activate it for me to replace both the TiVo and Receiver.

I want to wait until late 2009 for the new Directv TiVo, but it looks like i'm going to have to do something before then.

So, has anyone tried to have a HD-10 activated lately?

Welcome!

I think I have heard of a few people activating them. As long as you are cool with no HD soon on the HR10-250 (the MPEG2 HD that the HR10-250 receives is going to be going away soon), I dont think there should be a problem.

If you just want to watch or record SD channels it will probably work for a while. You might need a new card if you did not have it on your account before.

Should be no problem as long as the previous owner properly deactivated the HR10-250 from their account with no outstanding balance due. You'll probably need to get a new Access Card from DirecTV for ~$20.

special note. if you do not have HD access, the HR10 will trigger adding it.
I am no longer connected with Directv or any other satellite provider

Even if there will eventually be no HD from the satellites, aren't the OTA HD channels still available for viewing, recording, and playback? They are now on mine.

Again, Thanks for all the info.

I called DTv yesterday. Got a nice CSR who said that she would be happy to activate my HR10-250, send out a tech to take a look at my DirecTiVo, send me a free SD DVR, or sell me a HD DVR for $99.

I explained that I was not ready to spend the $99 (I'm holding out until the new HD Dtv TiVo comes out in late 2009) and that i'd like to activate the HR10-250. I asked her what channels I would not be able to get, and after putting me on hold for about 3-4 min, she came back and said that I would only be able to get 2 HD channels on the HR10-250.... I didn't argue with her about that... she recommended to get the HD DVR for $99. I explained that was out of my budget right now. She asked me to hold, came back after 2 min., said I was a loyal (7 yrs) customer and offered me the HD DVR for free "with rebates"

It should be here on Friday. I know its not the TiVo software, but it will hold me over until the new ones come out next year.

Note that this "free" DVR comes with a two year DIRECTV programming commitment and some of the rebates may lag the charges.

Not a big deal but it is also leased not owned. You did save yourself the upgrade fee and got a "new" receiver.

Maybe.

TiVo almost certainly will.
