We have adsl service from att which uses a 2wire wireless gateway. We have a single computer connected to it directly via ethernet, and two other computers that connect wirelessly. One of these is a laptop, and the other a desktop system in a bedroom. We have had no problems with the wireless set up at all for these two computers that are not ethernet -connected. For that reason I am loathe to mess with something that works flawlessly.

My question is this - will the linksys wireless gaming device "talk" to my gateway?

In my "opinion" yes. The WGA600N is easily configured, especially if you just connect it to the DirecTV device, and use that for configuring the WGA600N. As long as you know the security key for your wireless system!
