From ESPN.com:
The Arena Football League has canceled its 2009 season, pending an agreement with its players union.
The AFL's owners voted to cancel the season during a conference call last night.
That decision leaves the future of the 22 year old league in the air.

That's just sad.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect
those of DBSTalk.com, DIRECTV, DISH, The Signal Group, or any other company.

Does not surprise me at all..

What surprised me the most is that the league has been around for 22 years. I really thought the league has been around for no more then 10 or 11.

I thought the NFL had bought a stake in the league.

I think you are thinking of the CFL... the NFL owns a stake in the Canadian Football League. I don't think they invested in the Arena Football League.

Also of note, AFL2 will still have a season, the AFL developmental league.

This sad, I know a guy that plays for the Dallas Desperados. They don't make hugh amounts of money but, then again, I don't think there is hugh amounts of money to be made in it. Arena ball is fun to watch, reminds me of watching the little schools play 6 man ball. I hope they make a comeback in 2010 but, with the economy the way it is today a lesser sport like this can be forgotten in a year. Really sad.

Seems strange that the AFL is suspending it's season while it's minor-league AF2 is still running.

My bet is the AFL never comes back. I've yet to see one of these minor league operations return from a hiatus.

Bummer. I had hopes of taking the grand-tibbers to see a game or two. They are old enough now.

We'll see what happens next.

Merry Christmas!

This is true. The NFL purchased a 3-year option to buy a 49% stake in the AFL in 1999, but the option was never exercised.

I sure hope they get it resolved. For alot of us I think the game was really just catching on. Its an exciting game played by a bunch of guys who just want a chance to play. Kind of sad when you see something like this happen, and they spend Millions on prima dona's in baseball, just so they can strikeout 2 out of 3 times.
