William Houston

TSN drew 1.143 million viewers for its world junior hockey championship opener on Friday, an 8-1 win by Canada over the Czech Republic.

In the Toronto market, the junior game crushed the Toronto Maple Leafs-New York Islanders regional telecast on Sportsnet, which drew only 186,000 viewers. On most nights, a regional Leafs telecast will pull in close to 400,000.

On Sunday afternoon, a tough time slot given the wrap-up of the NFL regular season, 688,000 watched Canada thump Kazakhstan 15-0.

Canada, the defending champion, gets its first real test tonight against the United States.

I believe it. I just got back from Ottawa, and nose bleed seats for the Canada vs. Czech Republic were around $100 face value. It was a fun atmosphere thought.

I sure hope the US can find a way to pull off a win tonight against Canada.

The world junior hockey championship is TSN's most important asset, and underlining that point was the record 3.684 million viewers who tuned in to watch Canada defeat Sweden 5-1.

It was the largest audience in TSN's 25-year history and tops for a specialty channel.

In addition to TSN's 3.684 million, RDS drew 602,000 (also a record), for a total Canadian viewership of 4.286 million.

TSN averaged 1.741 million for the six telecasts involving the Canadian team. That's also a record, bettering the previous mark of 1.655 million for the 2006 tournament in Vancouver.
