I realize it has been there for a long time, but with all the new "league channels" and their placement it makes me scratch my head why it is still there. Is DirecTV thinking of moving it to the other "league channels" area? ... 212 NFL ... 213 MLB ... 215 NHL ... 217 Tennis?

Seems like a smart move to me if they would?

Could even see them moving the Golf channel there as well (maybe have them recall it PGA Channel ... lol.

I think NBA TV is not part of the basic package, you need Sports Pack or Premier to get it. That is most likely the reason it is in the 600s. Of course it is included with NBALP package as well.

D* Setup:

Slimline (AU9-S) w/no multiswitch
(1) HR21-100 0x87F (7/8/08 Made in Mexico) via HDMI to Pioneer PDP-6020FD
(1) HR24-100 0x87F (11/9/10 Made in Thailand) via HDMI to Panasonic TC-P58S2

FIOS 150/150

All part of the package deal. I expect them to move it in the future.

While they're at it, they should more CNN and Headline News over to the rest of the news/info channels, they're all alone in the low 200s.

From what I've always heard, that's part of their their contract with CNN. D* is obligated to keep their channels at the bottom.

Outdated idea (low channel numbers). People don't channel surf like they did in the old days when it paid to be earlier in the lineup.

I was just having the same discussion with my brother about the NBA channel. From what I have read, it has something to do with the agreement that NBA has with DTV and the other operators. When it started out it was supposed to be a bonus of the League Pass and sort of an adjunct to it. But I have never understood why they did that because if you have League Pass you have the games anyway so why do you need a channel to watch highlights of the games that you can watch yourself. Isn't that what ESPN is for too by the way.

I think NFL's move to put their channel in the basic tier was a smart move on their part. Look at how that channel has exploded and I don't even pay attention to NBA TV anymore, because although I do want it, I don't want to get either the sports package or League Pass just to get it and I don't think its really worth it or much of a channel anyway. Its so belongs in the basic tier with all the other ones, and I'm sure NBA will realize this soon enough and move it down if they want that channel to be meaningful. Lets hope they do it sooner than later.

I personally think all the sports channels should be in the 600s,starting w/ESPN at 600.
But they have it in their contract for a low #.I have heard this many times before when this topic has been brought up.

I agree that the idea is outdated. It actually used to make sense logically (not just being low channel numbers) for the CNN channels to be in the lower 200s. The CNN channels were placed together while having CNN/Sports Illustrated on 205 next to ESPN. Now (without CNN/SI), I think CNN would benefit by being grouped with the other news channels.

NBA TV also televises live nba games a couple times a week also, not just highlights for example the celtics knicks game is on nba tv nationally right now! other wise if you dont have nba tv you have to live in boston or new york to watch this game, because it also wont be on nba league pass.

I don't know how much stock can be put into this page (see link below), but according to the Yahoo-DirecTV channel listings/lineup ... they have NBATV listed as channel 214 and The Golf Channel at 216 ... which would give a very solid lineup:

212 NFL NET
213 MLB Net
214 NBATV
215 NHL Net
216 Golf Channel
217 Tennis Net

http://tv.yahoo.com/...ovider=32050924

Of course, the official DirecTV site doesn't have it that way ...

http://www.directv.c...pg/theGuide.jsp

but maybe the realignment is on it's way? ...

That's very interesting. It's not uncommon for changes to be found on third party sites before DirecTV makes them...

I know it is a money deal with the networks to have the lower channel numbers, but it would make channel surfing a lot nicer to have all the sports networks together.

Tennis

Yeah, except for Versus, which IMO shouldn't be moved. It's a general sports channel, the rest of them are all focused on a specific sport. It's fine where it's at.

According to Zap2It, channel 214 is MLB Alternate.

Well there goes my theory of moving NBATV to 214 then.

They did move Golf to 218 this morning though. So maybe NBATV to 216?

Sure, they don't necessarily channel surf, but they do page though the guide. I typically will start at the beginning of the guide (locals) or from ESPN and page down until I find something I want to see ignoring the idea that something better might be on a channel with a higher number. So I wouldn't completely discount channel placement as being important.
