Yes, I'm hoping to get the Sioux Falls feeds later this year also. Rapid City, same boat but they at least have option of outside antenna available. Meanwhile I will just live with the distant feeds just hope I can get the correct ones for programming.

Thanks for the help.

Your zip indicates Valentine, which is actually very close to the mountain time zone, so it isn't surprising they've got you there:

nebraskatimezone.png

I would assume Neilsen considers Valentine part of the North Platte DMA, which is closer to Valentine than Sioux Falls. Directv currently doesn't offer locals in North Platte, but that is very likely to change in a couple months after the new satellite is active. It doesn't have a spot beam for North Platte, but it would free up capacity on one of their satellites that has reconfigurable spot beams which should allow coverage for North Platte. Valentine at 130 miles away would be within its footprint and should be no problem to receive on your existing dish.

So you might want to hold out for a couple months and see what happens. You've lived with the LA DNS for this long, what's another two months? :)

I believe you can keep your existing DNS waiver when they add locals, so LA locals would give you two shots at the primetime schedule, you can catch the eastern feed via North Platte or the western feed via LA!

I'm kind of jealous thinking about it, I wish I had a western feed so when there's severe weather and they pre-empt all the network programs to monitor a hailstorm 70 miles away I wouldn't have to miss anything!

Thanks I'm not sure where I'll get my networks if it happens, hopefully Nebraska but North Platte only has 1 NBC local station with the others coming out of lincoln/omaha, I'm only 130 miles north of North Platte and the current Valentine cable TV and Dish Network supply locals out of Sioux Falls for this area.

I spent time golfing in Mullen, NE, and they had Denver locals on TV.

The Denver market is HUGE and not contiguous. It's very strange - it sticks out like a sore thumb on the 506sports NFL maps!

I can't even remember what they have out at Sand Hills and Dismal River since I'm not there to watch TV, but I think Dish has some spotbeams that are larger than normal, so it may stretch out far enough to hit Mullen.

A note from that map:
"County time zone designations per Department of Transportation except in the case of split counties where the NSI® service assigns the entire county to one time zone on majority of population basis."

It looks like Cherry County is one of those counties, assigned by Nielsen to the Mountain time zone. Two thirds of the county is in the Mountain time zone.

Thanks for the information everyone with Dish- Sioux Falls does supply locals as shown on the Nielsen map. I think James is onto something because 2/3 of county is in mountain they just threw the only populated area into the mountain zone also. I'll call again today and see if I get anywhere. Last time I spoke with the DNS department I was told its out of their control and was set by the feds. So in the original zone setup if errors were made I may have to just live with it and wait for Directv to add an spot beam for area. Hopefully coming soon.

Spoke with DNS department again for second time, same answer its out of their control. So stuck with west coast feeds.

My other option is basic cable with HD and DVR $55 a month for Sioux Falls locals. Not sure its worth the expense unless I just switch over everything. They do have 63 HD's on the expanded for $72 or $121 for everything, Or just wait Directv out for the satellite spot beam.

What are your signal strength readings for 103s transponders 16 and 20, and all listed transponders for 103ca and 103cb?

I did a little checking with the info on this site and Google Maps. Valentine is 224 miles from the center of Sioux Falls spot beam (as the crow flies) That's pretty far but based on the beam footprint map if your dish was aimed perfectly I think you should be able to pick them up. They'd be pretty weak and therefore very susceptible to weather, so even heavy cloud cover could cause them to go out, but you'd still have the LA locals as a backup.

As for how to get them on your account if you can get them, that's another issue, but first things first let's see if you can get anything on those two transponders. And if not whether your 103ca and 103cb readings show any room for improvement through more precise aiming of your dish.

Well it sure seems like you should be able to pick up the Sioux Falls locals, even though you have pretty crappy readings on 103ca/103cb. Your dish could definitely be aimed better...

Have you ever tried calling in and asking for them to enable the Sioux Falls locals on your account? Since you live in the Sioux Falls DMA maybe they'd be willing, even if they'll probably tell you you wouldn't be able to receive them. Can't hurt to try, though you might need to try a few CSRs to find one willing to do it.

Just make sure that doing so won't disable your LA locals. I don't think it should but just make sure.

This is a must, if they take them away and give you your DMA's locals, even if it is an accident, they wont be able to give them back to you most likely.  You would then be getting locals from your DMS and not qualify for DNS feeds.  Even though you are grandfathered in, you will have a hell of a time getting them back if they remove them even by mistake.

According to the numbers you posted, you should be able to receive them. You may be considered outside the area where Directv feels they are reliable enough they want to sell it to customers though - if they enable them but they go out easily during weather they'll have unhappy customers. Better to tell them they don't come in at all and don't enable them, and offer DNS instead.

The strange part is the reason for the law affecting DNS ... it is intended to prevent people from getting DNS channels earlier than other channels in their local market. Yet if you had Sioux Falls locals they would be Central time zone (even if you lived in a Mountain time area). In my opinion market should be the guide. (My opinion does not make much difference.)

Can you receive anything OTA from another market?

Nothing over air available. I turned the Directv installer away when he told me we got no locals even though at the time Directv said I did get locals even on the website. Its been changed since. This was last year January when I first started moving, so in September when I did the permanent move I purchased and installed the slimline dish myself to avoid another contract extension.

Well after many attempts and discussions getting East Coast or Sioux Falls locals with DNS and CSR decided on keeping Directv select package including HBO/MAX package for HBO price of one forever, also get HD discount and couple others thrown in. (still will have Sunday Ticket available)

For locals will go with cable the newest technology similar to Verizon FiOS where everything comes in over internet. The HD package has less channels 63-HD but more appealing to the type of programming I like including Outdoor, Sportsman and MavTV in HD. All the sports channels including the CBS including Fox sports 1&2. I really like there HD tier being offered for $70+8 for DVR include additional set top
