If times got tough for you, would you cancell any of these?

DirecTV? In a heartbeat. I would miss it for about a week.

I just called last night & canceled my DTV service when my billing period ends Feb. 12th. It's got to the point where the cost isn't worth the use I get out of it. All those useless SD channels (especially the shopping ones), and now that the NFL season is over, no point spending the $70+ dollars I was each month to not watch a bunch of crap. My cell phone & internet gets a lot more use, and there are plenty of other things I can do then sit in front of the idiot box. If there was a HD Only package with just the 130 HD channels, then I might consider subscribing again, if not, maybe when the 2009 NFL season rolls around I might, but with NFL.com offering all the games online, ST isn't even a draw anymore.

À la carte would be preferable when subscribing, but the chances of that happening are none & none. =)

I`ve been toying with the idea of cancelling. While money is getting tighter and tighter, my main reason is the programming. While I understand its not D* fault, I'm tired of seeing the same shows over and over again. I keep seeing the same shows over and over again. Some have been showing for months. And this is on most channels. The lack of new programming may be the deciding factor for me, as I cant see spending this kind of money anymore for constant repeats...

I indicated earlier in this thread that I had made some budget adjustments already, and today I finally did actually call DirecTV and reduce my package from Premier to Choice Plus HD/DVR plus HBO. $29 a month savings from that change.

I did that a few months ago, but switched back, because when I dropped the premiums I stopped watching anything except NFL (and that's over.)

Equipment includes a buncha stuff that I no longer have interest in detailing

I cringe every month at paying what will soon be a little over $90 for D* service simply because my wife and I have about 10 channels that we watch most of the time. Unfortunately some of those 10 can't be had by switching to the Family package, so we continue to pay. But D* would probably be the first thing to be dropped if I were to lose my job.

In my area I can get 50+ digital channels, including all the majors in HD from two markets via a small OTA antenna. You bet your butt I'd drop DirecTV if I had to. In fact, I'm thinking of doing it anyway, if for nothing more than to keep MTV and a few others from assaulting my kids with their adult oriented garbage during daytime and evening hours.

Does anyone know if you can drop the standard programming and just get a foreign language channel and DVR service?

I'm sure you can. Whether or not that will satisfy a service committment, I don't know.

I think with an international package you need something called "DirecTV Basic" package which is $10 a month. Other then that you should be fine.

Thank you, I will call them about it. Never even heard of that basic package before.
