CBS HD Locals Issues

Overall I am very happy with my 2nd attempt at Directv's HD dvr...I no longer have a audio stutter or pic freeze/playback freeze issue. Wausau-Rhinelander HD locals have been up a few weeks now and I have audio dropouts on CH 7 CBS. I had issue with Survivor last Thursday and 60 Minutes Sunday. Survivor was so bad I deleted it and I was ticked, 60 Minutes was audio synch issues but I watched it, picture was also terrible. From what I have read here is many have problems with CBS around the nation. What is being done about the problem at hand with this specifically? Im not too thrilled to see any price increase AGAIN when service is not perfect. Directv is capable of quality service because it was years ago! I hate issues and suprises that effect what I want to watch when I want to watch it. Of course we all do.

The types of problems you are describing have virtually nothing to do with DirecTV most of the time.

They are problems at the local station, specifically having to do with the MPEG encoders and how they handle switching between content with different types of digital audio streams. These problems affect OTA users as well, but often affect satellite users (DirecTV and Dish) more because both have to transcode the feed from MPEG2 to MPEG4, and that additional layer of encoding can amplify the affects of these glitches.

This is an industry-wide problem at the network level as well as the local station level. There is very high awareness of these problems throughout the TV industry, and lots of work is being done to correct the problems, but money is limited, expensive products under warranty are waiting for fixes from vendors, vendors are trying to resolve conflicts between equipment, and stations are struggling with content coming in on a variety of different media types and formats. It's all fall-out of the digital transition, and it's going to be a while before the issues are resolved, but with time, they will be.

I haven't had that many issues with CBS and Survivor recorded fine for me. Just in case you aren't aware, you can go to the CBS website and watch the Survivor episode that you missed. Link to CBS
