Thought I would post this commercial install I saw today, using the Alaska 1.2m dish setup to reduce rain fade. Pretty nice setup.

seen this thread hadnt had any action for a while so figured id put up a few of the ones iv took pics of.

pic 1 grounded to ac unit ( after running across this one I dont know if the dish installers in this area are told its ok to ground to the ac units but iv ran across several like this )

pic 2 and 3 went out to a movers connection to see this, needless to say I canceled it out, but I did help the customers at least get tv.

pic 4 this is only about half the dishes on this building

pic 5 went out to a service call on a job were it had been installed but about 2 months, the cable wasnt buried and ran through a basement window on the left side of the house (barely blocked in the pic by the dish), the cable you see now is mine i hadnt buried yet going to a ground block next to the cable box

pic 6 and 7 is on a upgrade job (initial w/o was for 2 box standard brought to attention after install suppose been 1hddvr 1 standard but he didnt have hddvr on truck) were it hadnt been installed but a few days, in the second pic the meter base is right around the corner of the house about 5 inches. to make this none grounding worse it was a pole mount 20 foot from the house not buried. But to top this cherry off on top it was a fairly new solo tech still being paid hourly so why he done it like this I really have no ideal

being i posted some bad ones figured id post a couple good ones to counter them ( after the first one )

in the first pic is a service call on a install a few days old ( from the same tech as in the last 2 on the post above ) were the customer was getting ssfs, when pulling in and seeing the dish network dish setting next to building from being took down and testing the signal at ground block was good, asked cust if first tech got in attic knowing the answer before asking, inches from the opening as you see in plan site this is what was found.

I am so thankful I've had good installers. Including my latest with Directv. But even my Dish Network one's have been good. I've even had installers from both give me their personal cell numbers so if I ever needed repair to just call them and not mess with the 800 numbers. I remember back in the mid and late 90's when you bought the equipment and I did the installs myself. I miss doing those, but I'm older now and don't mind letting someone else do them and they are a little more involved now.

Is that even legal? Doesn't the power company own those poles? :eek2:

They sure do, around here when they see something like that they sometimes give the owner a timeframe to have them removed.

Sometimes they just snatch them down.

I've done a few ODU Relocates over power pole installs.

LOL, just found this topic.

Never occurred to me to take pictures of bad stuff I encounter. Sometimes I take a picture of something I'm proud of.

I've seen Bishop tape used to make a 1 3/4 pipe 2 inches (and that install had 2 DirecTV guys, trainer and a trainee) the Bishop tape held about three months. I used a steel bushing to fix it.

Encountered a brick wall that was so soft Dish would not install on it. Installer tried a regular (not masonry) drill bit and it drilled faster than had it been in wood. He advised building owner and he said it was insured and not to worry.

I've seen several DirecTV KaKus on OSB and missed the rafter for the foot and the monopoles.

Encountered a Hughes internet dish with a DirecTV wing LNB mounted on a 'pole barn' style building. Wall wasn't rigid enough to hold alignment. I called Hughes and advised I was hired to fix install and if they wanted they could come fix it first. They declined, and I took care of it. I fabricated a set of braces and a pipe and set them in concrete to hold the dish. Internet portion still in use 8 years later, wing LNBs are long gone these days. Had to have a special shielded LNB to withstand the interference from the dish when it was transmitting. Glad they don't do that any more.

Saw a dish (think it was a Dish 500) on top of a windmill, at least 40 feet off the ground. No trees or buildings, LOS extended to base of windmill, no idea why dish was on top.

Encountered a building that had a KaKu on it that needed reaimed every December and April, more or less. After 2nd year, I started asking questions, and found out even though building was drywalled, insulated, and inhabited, it was on skids, not a foundation. Ground would freeze in the winter, and the frost heave would unlevel the building enough to unplumb the mast. Moved dish to metal pole and used 3 bags of cement mix. Has worked for 3 winters since. Funny what people call home, ain't it?

Had a dish 500 stop getting 119. Signal on 110 and 129 was nothing to brag about, but nothing on 119. Couldn't figure that one out, no billed, and set up call back for Dish. Dish guy was there quite a while, and then he got lucky. He noticed a very slight crease in the bowl of the dish. He though a tree limb or a vandal had hit the bowl 'perfectly' to bend it just right to still work on 2 sats, but not 3. He put a new bowl on it and it worked fine. Between the 2 of us, we had tried several LNBs, different receivers, reran cabling and cussed.

Had a lady call, and her DirecTV HD upgrade worked on all receivers but 1. Installer could get 101, 110, and 119, but no 99 or 103 on one location. He changed box, still no go. He gave up and had a different tech look at it. No go. I looked at it. No idea either. In frustration, took a walk outside, and noticed in addition to the new KaKu, there was an old Hughes internet dish on the roof, WITH a wing LNB. I'd already seen a couple of those beasts, and thought, what if that one receiver location is still wired to that old LNB? Well, it was. Managed to find wire in attic and get it to the Zinwell and all was fine.

Anyone ever encounter a hybridized KaKu/Hughes internet combo dish? How about a post of the day medal to the first one to find one and post a pic here!

Walking through a subdivision in my neighborhood. Saw this new Dish network install. Is this even legal? So close to overhead power lines.

If I remember correctly I believe the ODU has to be at least 6ft from the weather head and lines, not sure if code has changed since leaving the install field though, it looks a bit too close though if ya ask me

Yeah it was about 3-4 ft from the weather head and lines. Seems that might cause electrical RF noise as well as LOS issues. The side of the house was clear. Not sure why it wasn't mounted there.

I seen a E* install last weekend that i would be willing to bet the children's college fund that in 6-8 months someone will be back for a trouble call...

Dish is mounted on the side of the back of the house. Lines are ran across the flat roof, unsecured and then down a brick wall 3 stories (again unsecured) to a splitter that is then tapped into the former comcast lines that run into the house. No rubber weather protectors on the ends, no caps on the empty ports that are all exposed to the weather:nono2:

xmguy that one is pretty close, i was at one not to long ago ( forgot to take a pic ) but it was literally, inches away from the powerlines so close when the wind blows it has to hit the dish, ( this was a switch from dish to direct ) the cust asked if I could put it back in the same location, I said absolutely not, they asked if I would remove the dish, Again I said absolutely not and explained why, cust was understanding and also got a pole mount lol.

Don't know if its fair to place all the blame on the installers for this incident involving a new Mesa Ariz. sub. since part of the blame is the misleading DIRECTV commercial promotion about the allegedly "clean" "wireless" capability of the Genie/client system which can get the technician/installer in trouble no matter the quality of the install job.

http://www.azfamily....-203253511.html

As the commercial should have made clear at least in the usual small print displayed in a footnote to the commercial that some cords and cables must of course be visible at the TV where the actual Genie server is connected to. And unless the AC power and cable outlets are positioned totally behind the other wall mounted TVs with Genie clients, lines must be visible on them as well.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Does this job belong in the "Hall of Shame," and what could or should have been done better?

Wow, I guess I can get Directv at home, I just need to find an installer willing to climb about 60 or 70 feet up the oak tree in my backyard and probably have it re-aimed regularly as the tree grows and throws off the alignment :righton:
