What is the Cutting Edge? To answer that, let's look at the history of the Cutting Edge.

The Cutting Edge started with a partnership between DIRECTV and hobbyist Earl Bonovich. Earl had become well-known for his reviews of the DIRECTV R10 and R15 DVRs, and was invited to join the staff of DBSTalk in 2005. His nearly limitless effort built bridges between this site and the engineering staff at DIRECTV.

In 2006, DIRECTV released the HR20 High-Definition DVR, its first HD DVR developed completely in house. While the design and proposed feature set was strong, ultimately most agreed that there was still some development to do. At the same time, DIRECTV's Standard-Definition DVR, the R15, was steadily improving but still had some issues to overcome.

In the late fall of 2006, Earl Bonovich unveiled the first ever optional download for DIRECTV receivers, and the Cutting Edge was born. Since then, there have been hundreds of downloads available across the entire DIRECTV receiver line.

Feedback from testers has resulted in major improvements in stability, as well as new features created specifically due to demand from forum members.

DBSTalk's Cutting Edge program is different from most test programs.
  • Unlike a true private beta, everyone is invited to participate.
  • Unlike a true public beta, all testers are expected to keep a low profile.
  • Unlike most forums, the Cutting Edge forum discourages negativity and rudeness.
  • Unlike a traditional beta program, new releases are available almost every week.

It's the combination of diverse testers, concise and polite error reporting, and rapid new releases that make the rapid development model work for DIRECTV. Using thousands of hours of testing per week, bugs are quickly identified and squashed, and long-term issues get the focus they deserve.
