The Cutting Edge program was founded by former DBSTalk moderator Earl Bonovich in cooperation with DIRECTV. The Program is a way for you to give valuable feedback to DIRECTV by downloading pre-release versions of firmware to your DIRECTV receivers. A set of risks are outlined here so that you can understand what it means to be a part of the Cutting Edge program.

What you should not do

Do not contact DIRECTV
You agree that all support for this software will be through DBSTalk.com. Contacting DIRECTV about your receivers while they are running pre-release software is grounds for immediate removal from the group.

Do not post about Cutting Edge versions in public forums
The Cutting Edge program is located in a private area that requires opting in for access. This is to protect the information so that it cannot be easily searched on the Internet. All Cutting Edge discussion should take place here in the Cutting Edge forums. You should never post information about the Cutting Edge versions in public areas either on DBSTalk.com or other forums.

Do not download just to get a new feature
Cutting edge versions are typically not "customer ready" which means that there is an increased chance that a major bug may exist.

Do not download if you are unwilling to risk it all
If you are not willing to accept these risks, then do not download a cutting edge version to your receiver.

Do not create polls right after a download
All polls created on the first day a cutting edge release is available or on the two (2) days following the day a cutting edge release is available will be deleted without discussion. The reason for this is to give people a chance to see the changes in action before passing judgment.

What you should do

Understand a cutting edge version may not be stable
This is the cutting edge. There is a chance that your receiver may stop working. There is a chance that you may lose all of your programming. Understand that there are no guarantees of anything.

Understand there is a chance of decreased performance
A cutting edge version often includes new pieces of code as enhancements are added and bugs are fixed. As a result, there are times when the performance will decrease.

Report issues at DBSTalk
You should report issues whenever appropriate, so as to improve the software in future releases. All reports should be made @ DBSTalk.com in the Cutting Edge forum. Do not contact DIRECTV or post issues in the general forum area.

Inform all members of your household
Make sure folks who use this receiver understand that everything could be lost. Downloading a cutting edge version could lead to unsatisfactory results.

Understand that participation is voluntary
No one is forcing you to participate in the Cutting Edge program. If you are dissatisfied with your receivers while running pre-release software, you have one and only one recourse: revert to the national release.

Have the right equipment
In order to participate in the Cutting Edge Program, you must have the right receiver. This list includes an HR, H, D or R series receiver from DIRECTV.

While the Cutting Edge Program is a cooperative effort, DirecTV and DBSTalk are not affiliated. DBSTalk is ultimately not responsible for any issues related to DIRECTV hardware, software and programming.

These rules are subject to change at anytime without notice.

By joining the Cutting Edge group, you agree to the following rules:
  • You agree to download pre-release software to your own receivers, with the full understanding that this software will be less stable than national release software.
  • You agree that all support for this software will be through DBSTalk.com. Contacting DIRECTV about your receivers while they are running pre-release software is grounds for immediate removal from the group.
  • You agree to report issues whenever appropriate, so as to improve the software in future releases.
  • You may be asked by DBSTalk.com staff for more information about your receivers, and you agree to provide this information whenever possible.
  • You understand that your participation here is voluntary. If you are dissatisfied with your receivers while running pre-release software, you have one and only one recourse: revert to the national release.

Further, you agree and understand these guidelines, and understand that failure to follow them will result in your removal from the group:
  • This is a "working" forum. We may have fun, but humorous, off-topic posts will not be permitted on a regular basis.
  • Rudeness toward other members, or toward DIRECTV staff whether named or unnamed will not be tolerated.
  • For each download, one and only one anticipation thread will be started. This thread will be completely deleted after the next thread starts and those posts will not count toward your post count.
  • For each download, one and only one general discussion thread per receiver family will be started. This thread is for positive discussion and constructive criticism only.
  • For each download, one and only one Issues-Only thread per receiver family will be started. Off-topic posts in these threads will be deleted.
  • Group members are welcome to start new threads for specific issues, workarounds or topics, but as a rule these threads will be closed whenever there is a new software version available. Off-topic posts in these threads will be deleted.

If you agree to download a CE release, you also agree to:
  • Provide detailed reports of each issue and improvement you find.
  • Not post about a CE anywhere but in the CE forum – never in the general Q & A area or in other public forums

No one will think less of any member who chooses to revert to national release software.

Cutting edge versions of the firmware are only available during certain times. If you attempt to force a download outside of these certain times, then you will receive the national release version and not a cutting edge version.

DBSTalk will provide you with a set of tools that enable you to know when a cutting edge version is available. Every attempt is made to keep you up to date on the status of a cutting edge version, but the final decision to force a download or not rests in your hands. Failure to utilize the tools that we provide can lead to unexpected results.

The tools that DBSTalk.com provides are:
  • A dedicated thread announcing when a cutting edge version is expected
  • A set of release notes (when available) that indicate what has changed
  • A chat room for confirming when a cutting edge version is available
  • An issues thread to report any problems that you may find
  • A discussion thread to discuss changes and make suggestions

DBSTalk.com is here to help you get the most out of the Cutting Edge program.

The Cutting Edge program will require membership. If you do not opt-in to the Cutting Edge group, then you will not see the DIRECTV: Cutting Edge forum or any related posts.

You are not required to download a Cutting Edge release to your receivers to participate in this program. However, you do need to abide by the rules to continue participation.

The Cutting Edge Rules have been updated slightly. Please take a moment to read through them again. The changes regard the following:

Do not post about Cutting Edge versions in public forums

In order to participate in CE, you must run a special search on your receiver or DVR.

On a DVR, search for IAMANEDGECUTTER and then press the red button for a keyword search. The search won't find anything but special reporting features will be enabled.

On a receiver, do a Keyword Search for IAMANEDGECUTTER.

If you decide to opt out, do the same search but use IAMANEDGECUTTER NOT as the search term.

Here are some modifications to the rules you should know about:

Cutting Edge forum

The CE forum is open to all who choose to join the CE group and who agree to the rules. This includes agreeing to post issues when you find them. Issues should be posted in the appropriate issue thread, never in other parts of the CE forum or general DBSTalk forums.

We have also decided to open things up a little in the CE forum. We will not be closing threads as quickly as we have in the past, and you should feel free to have as much discussion as you need. Unlike our previous policy of "One discussion thread per week, per receiver" we now encourage you to open as many threads as you need. Please note: We will still close any thread that gets sour, mean or inappropriate in any way without comment.

No CE Chatter outside the CE forum

While we are loosening up other CE rules we have to tighten up on this one. Any posts that reference CE in any way, unless made by a Moderator, will be deleted without warning. In the case of multiple offenses you will be permanently removed from the CE group. This includes posting or discussing CE information at other forums. DBSTalk is the exclusive home of the Cutting Edge.

CE bans for users with infractions

From this point forward, any member that has received an infraction for any reason may also receive a temporary or permanent ban from the CE group. We want the Cutting Edge forum to be a fun, distraction free area for people who are dedicated to the testing process, unfortunately a few rude individuals can ruin that quickly.

CE means, you must be a DIRECTV subscriber and an active tester

This is not a new rule, but a reminder, you will be removed from the CE Group if you state that you do not have DIRECTV service. You may also be removed from the CE group if you state in a post or vote in a poll that you are no longer willing to report issues.
