Have any of you heard if DirecTV will someday go to the kind of system that permits you to watch a recorded program on another TV from the one you used to record it on?

This functionality is in the works. It's called Multi Room Viewing or MRV for short. If you join the Cutting Edge guys you can find out more.
DirecTV since '96, Waivers for ABC, CBS, NBC, & Fox, HR23-700 & HR24-500/AM21, using ethernet based MRV.

Yup, it has been announced in a few conference calls .. Might be available sometime in 2010.
