Why not? Some of the best films were filmed in black and white. They look amazing in HD. Better yet...blu-ray rather than broadcast HD.

The new sat launched so I decided to revisit this thread of ongoing hope. I want national HD channels...no PPV, no premium movie channels - not this time. To keep up, D* needs to give us:
Travel
BBCAmerica
AMC
TCM
Lifetime

And that's for starters. And yes, I do want to watch black and white movies on an HD channel. Everything looks better on an HD channel and b/w movies look amazing.

Do I believe any of this will happen before March? No.

You're missing out then. TCM would be my overwhelming first choice followed by BBA, IFC and the rest of the pay movie channels.

Directv has been using the number "200" an awful lot in their current commercials. Oh, the anticipation!

It probably should be noted that when D* said that ESPNU would launch by the end of third quarter D12 was scheduled to launch 2-3 before it actually did so I'm not sure that time line still applies.

SO---does D* honor their press release and give us ESPNU HD by April? Or must we wait until D12 is turned over and testing complete?--2nd quarter 2010.........

Also, when will we know about the Sunday ticket bandwith?

D* didn't "honor" their HBO press release so I'm not sure why they would feel the need to honor that one, especially since if they hold off ESPNU will likely only be delayed relatively briefly. As for NFLST bandwidth, I would pay attention to whatever Sixto says. His threads tend to be the best when it comes to facts about D*'s bandwidth. The only thing I would add is that D* is unlikely to temporarily use D11 bandwidth until it knows absolutely that they will be able to use D12 to pick up the slack.

Thats funny. Definitely does not want to watch them in TurnerColor (colorized).

Of course in HD (film is higher resolution than HD) and in the original aspect ratio (OAR). Uncut. Big bowl of popcorn, etc.

Briefly, in the mid to late eighties, Ted Turner thought he could attract new viewers to his new acquired film libraries by colorizing the most popular titles in his collection. This led mostly to outrage and lawsuits and Mr. Turner quickly folded. Instead he created Turner Classic Movies, which has been one of the leaders in the new cinephile movement, discovering and restoring "lost" films and providing a whole new generation easy access to pre-1968 Hollywood filmmaking. Still, some people need to bring up comments made by Ted Turner over twenty years ago and before the channel even existed when talking about TCM.

These are announced or highly speculated.

If D* adds 40-60 HD channels in the next 2-6 months based on most likely candidates and channels already announced I believe that it is safe to say D* could add many of these channels by July 2010.

Thanks for a great list (which soundly thrashes my half-assed list posted a month or so ago).

I'm happy to say I don't care about any of the channels you (and Satelliteracer?) project as "not likely to be added" on DirecTV.

You know, I thought about the same thing when I saw Enter the Dragon was on blu-ray. Why would you want to waste your time on an old movie that looks so bad. Well, as it turns out, it doesn't look as bad as it did every other time I have seen it.

So, yes, I would prefer to see even black and white films in high def. But the movies will only be great if they are restored. Also, the original aspect for many old movies is apparently not 1.85x1 or 16x9, but more along the lines of 4x3. But the qualification about high def and original aspect applies to all high def channels (TNT).

Give me AMCHD and MSNBCHD and I'd be happy. Not because I watch so much MSNBC but it's kind of jarring when flipping between them and they're the only SD channel.
