Just guessing... Movies are more compressable, and may be pre-encoded with tighter compression.

It's not real-time streaming --they can do it as slow as they are comfortable with and have the resources to separate the streams. They are going to the HDD just like an internet VoD would go. In theory, if they had the resources at both ends, they could do all 400 movies simultaneously on one transponder. Why six strikes them as the optimum for that, might be moderately interesting to know, but probably not terribly consequential (e.g. no reason to think it would impact PQ, for instance). Sort of like you could in theory download a 1080p feature-length movie over a 56k modem with no degradation of PQ, if you had that kind of patience. :)

The push stuff is 6 HD per transponder? Normally they put 5 HD per transponder. Do you think they are using some newer, more efficient encoders to get 6 HD in the space of 5 without quality loss? If so, perhaps this would open a few more potential 'slots' in the current arc for HD adds prior to D14.

One more Cinema HD down too? Wonder what they are making room for? TruTV HD? That one was announced a long time ago... but there's much better ads I could think of.

Universal Sports Network HD?
I want CLTV / CLTV HD on direct tv.

Sixto, did you notice last month(s) D12 begin using 12 tpns (freq 19.850 GHz) as spot beams? What is surprise me, (I re-read your first posts about D12), the D12's SB [tpn15-24] should works in "B" Ka-Low 18.3-18.8 GHz range. But, these twelve are in same band as SW-1 SB tpns.

This makes no sense.

D12's technical "Schedule S" on file with the FCC doesn't even mention a Tp. 8 spotbeam or CONUS beam as possible.

Lowest frequency on Ka A-band is listed as CONUS beam Tp.9 and 10 centered at 19,890 Mhz. And all spotbeam transponders listed are numbered 15-24 all on the Ka B-band.

Can you share the PDF? I can't find pertinent D12 docs at FCC site :(.

Here you go ... :)

For D12's Ka-band payload that is.

If you're interested in D12's RDBS band RB-2A payload Schedule S, it's on a separate document filing.

Thank you.
Have you seen D12 doc/page similar to what I printed [only one page#8] from that document and I don't remember its URL or a name - for D11, but very useful:
Chapter "5. Operational Characteristics// 5.1 Frequency and Polarization Plan" with nice graphics in red/green/purple/yellow/etc colors?

Anyway, somehow D12 (it cannot be SW-1) begin use (perhaps last two years !) frequencies in 19.2-19.7 ranges for spot beam transponders.
Or ... Do you have any idea about the twelve 19.85 GHz transponders in SW-1 corner ?

Yes, I still have that filing with the nice colored graphics illustrating the frequency and polarization scheme for D11 in its FCC application for LOA at the time. But never saw one in D12's LOA, so I just assumed it was the same. For the uplink side anyhow.

I actually thought Spaceway 1 and 2's transponders were, originally at least, supposed to numbered from 1-8, but was shortened to 1-6 due to their larger Tp. bandwidth overlapping with the future D12 and D14's A-band CONUS Tps.

But anyway, are you sure that Tp. 8 is not actually coming from Spaceway 1 since it is a spotbeam and as you said in another thread, despite the Spaceway's oft-quoted 62.5 Mhz Tp. bandwidth, the TS only uses about half of it?

So perhaps SW 1 can light up its Tp.7 and/or 8 for additional bandwidth for newer LiL markets without interfering with D12's CONUS Tps.?

My beef in a basket with the freg 19.85 GHz what is not fit into SW plan with 62.5 MHz grid; the freq 19.85 came from D1x freq plan, 40 MHz grid and tp9/10 is at 19.89 GHz. Adding to that (it's not TP#8 as you wrote) there are twelve transponders with same freq 19.85 GHZ, so all of them are SB type.

Well, on second thought ... perhaps I should take back my suggestion about D12 as a source of the 19.85[0670] GHz twelve transponders, because of its 'uneven' IF = 1,800,670; all D12 IFs has last three KHz numbers as 000, like tp8 1,840,000.
