Existing hard drive space on an HR20 is not a concern as I plan to dismantle the unit, take out the existing drive, and put in a new drive as large as the HR20 can handle.

I like this idea a lot. It makes a whole bunch of sense to me to buy a used but working HR20-700 and put in a new hard drive, which is most likely the first thing to go wrong.

If I could keep the total price around $150-200, I wouldn't even need the protection plan, which I've always thought was essential with owned equipment. Getting 2-3 years of use out of this piece, which is a reasonable bet, would make it at least a wash when dies.

And since I don't have your other issues and am perfectly happy with what I've got for hardware right now, I can wait for the piece to come to me. I can get it for my price.

With the HR20s getting long in the tooth, I think over the next few months will be a great time to buy a DVR. I bet we'll see more and more of them on the market.

Good thinking, Avder.

After speaking to another rep last night, Dtv is telling me I have to return the HR20; this is after a retention specialist told me they didn't want it back.

I swear these people have no idea what they're doing. :(
