For some reason, in the guide, all the los angeles locals except for channel 5 are showing Off Air from 12:00-1:00 am. Changing to the channels shows the special event not available for purchase message.

The channels were being moved to a new E14 satellite. They should be back by now.

I wish DISH would make those moves for west coast viewers later in the night (perhaps around 3am PT with the daily sports moves) but fortunately channel moves are rare and with everything settling in on a new satellite there shouldn't be the need for another move for a while.

I agree. I only got the first 25 minutes of Letterman and Leno when they moved the San Francisco channels.

One would think the could, considering the main control is here in Denver and Cheyenne; the Mountain Time Zone. I know they have to worry about those in the Atlantic (Puerto Rico), Eastern and Central time zones, as well. And not to mention, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii times zones. They have to deal with seven time zones. So, there is sort of a limited window here. To get uplinks done by 5:00 AM Atlantic, they must do them done by 11:00 PM Hawaii time, for example; which is 2:00 AM Mountain.

The other option, is to do multiple uplinks, but that may make things more complicated than they are now. They really can't do it by arch, because there are markets on the 129 satellite that are in the all the time zones, except the Atlantic. So, effectively, I think DISH is doing teh best they can.

I suspect, once they get the new satellites on line, and all the markets upliinked, there will rare circumstances of moves we have been seeing lately or whatever big uplink is suppose to happen on or around this coming 3 June.

OMG, one night isn't going to kill you.

I survived, but barely.:D

Still, the issue revolves around an awareness of customer viewing habits.

It is one of those common but rare situations.
It is common to make moves at 3am ET/12mn PT.
It is rare to move a local market.

In this case I believe they COULD have waited until 3am PT ... the moves were on the same transponder different spot beam (on a different satellite). They also moved to a different uplink center.

119° 3s5 (San Diego) - Uplinked on TP 3 from Cheyenne
119° 3sB03 (Las Vegas) - Uplinked on TP 3 from Spokane

119° 1s5 (San Diego) - Uplinked on TP 1 from Cheyenne
119° 1sB03 (Las Vegas) - Uplinked on TP 1 from Spokane

TP 1 from Cheyenne feeds 1sB22 (Puerto Rico) on E14
TP 3 from Cheyenne feeds 3sB22 (Puerto Rico) on E14
Both of those transponders were lit up this morning with channels not available ... that work COULD have waited until 6am ET.

With the rareness of major shifts like this it is probably easier to do everything at once.

8000 KABC (7) LOS ANGELES, CA (ABC) moved from 3s5 (San Diego) to 3sB03 (Las Vegas) at 119° (SD Los Angeles, CA market Hidden)

Especially since people with no knowledge of forums like this would be calling the stations, then maybe dish network asking what happened to their stations. A better way to do this would be to change the timing, and instead of having the guide say off air, have something more informative.

"Maintenance" would work.
