I read the post about the skip vs slip . . . mine only "slips." I tried putting the "30skip" in the search, as mentioned, but nothing changed. Anything else I can try? (I miss the skip from the Tivo unit.) Or does this work only on certain receivers? (I have the "HDDVR" -- the one with the blindingly bright blue lights.)

Do a keyword search on "30skip". It won't find any results but it will put your receiver into 30 sec. Skip mode.

Since it costs 2.4¢ to produce a penny, my 2¢ worth is really 4.8¢ worth.  That 4.8¢ is my own and not the 4.8¢ of DIRECTV, Dish, or anyone else for that matter.

And to clarify, make sure you do a keyword search. Also, if you don't like the blue light, hold the left button of the light ring down and keep pressing the right one. It will go through several cycles of dimmer light, then turn off.

One thing to note, this setting does not survive a reboot. So if the ring lights back up, you know your box rebooted at some point. You can then repeat the process.

I did do a keyword search for "30skip," as mentioned, but it didn't work!! Are there different kinds of "searches" I can do in that I did the wrong one, or something?

You have to do a keyword search.

Menu > Smart Search > Enter '30SKIP' in input > press {RED BUTTON} > press {EXIT}

That should do it.

Slip glides through 30 seconds, allowing you to catch a few frames here and there.... Skip completely jumps ahead 30 seconds.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect
those of DBSTalk.com, DIRECTV, Dish Network, or any other company.

skip instantly moves 30 seconds forward.
slip is like fast forward 30 seconds forward (you still see what is on the channel but very quickly)
I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.

That is really cool. Are there any other functions that can be accessed through the search method?
