Just call and ask for Denise. She'll give you an HR24 for 99 cents.

I think Apple should give me a new iPhone. :)

OK, so if they don't have any upfront charges then they'd have to have higher monthly lease charges for the more advanced receivers.

I don't see why considering that the same upfront fee used to be a purchase. Now they get their equipment back. I know the purchase prices used to substantially more but the components got much cheaper too.

When you lease a car can you get a Chevy Malibu and a Chevy Corvette for the same monthly lease charge with no down payment?

DirecTV charges the same monthly lease fee for a no frills SD receiver as a HD DVR, you want a more advanced receiver you pay the up front 'upgrade' charge for the advanced receiver.

See post My Setup for configuration info.

RAD, you're funny. Comparing an HR24 to an R16 is not like leasing a Corvette vs. Malibu? As much as they want to make you believe in this business model, it's essentially a box rental. Ok you win, if you want to charge $1-$2 more for an HD box. How about you do it this way? Keep the HD "lease" fee $4.99, which used to called, of course a mirroring fee. Charge $2.99-$3.99 for the SD units....edit..and waive all upfront costs.

Yes it is a fair comparison when you say there shouldn't any upfront charge and have the same monthly lease/rental fee as your original post wanted.

Yes, they could do like cable companies do and charge a higher fee for HD or HD DVR's like my TWC system does, last time I checked it was like $17/month per HD DVR, doesn't take that long to make the increased monthly charge cost more then the upfront charge and lower monthly rental/lease fee.

See post My Setup for configuration info.

I like the way they do it now. Once you pay to play initially, you pay the same as any other receiver. Saves us long timers a bunch of money. :D

Wait, you want the inital fee to go away and the monthly charge to stay the same or go down?

Good luck with that.

How about an option...

Option #1. Buy the box=low monthly mirror fee, I drive it off the lot and it's mine. I can park it in my garage forever.

Option #2. No up-front charge=higher monthly mirror fee. I drive it off the lot but it's theirs, it must eventually be returned to their lot.

Option #2 is what I'd actually call a lease!

Some people need to lease, they cannot afford the up-front costs to own. It just seems pretty basic to me but who am I, other then a fairly satisfied customer with the boxes I want so far.
This of course is subject to change in the next 2 weeks.

If i were DTV i 'd be more concerned with this rain fade issue. Here in the chicagoland area everytime WE GET A SPRINKLE OF RAIN the picture is searching for signal. If this happens to me during a nascar event i will drop them like a three foot putt.

You may need signal tweaking. We need a heavy storm to even lose any signal.
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

If you have HD receivers check your signal readings for the 99©, 103(ca) and 103(cb) satellites, they should be 90 or greater, if not the dish needs to be realigned.

I'm buying a few HR24's, but a free pony would be nice.

As long as the pony can mow the lawn and vacuum the pool every day. :D

Since it costs 1.66¢ to produce a penny, my 2¢ worth is really 3.32¢ worth.  That 3.32¢ is my own and not the 3.32¢ of DIRECTV, Dish, or anyone else for that matter.

Off topic but, TalladegaTommy, what did you think of the incident between Harvick and Logano on Sunday? Who was at fault Joey or Kevin?

No. With everyone else in this thread wanting one, too, they ran out! :nono2:

It's been worth it, though. This had to be my favorite post of the past few days. Who knew four little words could derail a thread so thoroughly? :D

Neither really, it was a racing incident, although it looked like the kid came down the track a little, it happens...

I called DIRECTV a few days ago and complained that my HR20’s are too slow. They overnighted two new HR24s for free. Got them this morning. I cannot beleive how fast these are! I also got ST free for the next three years. Thanks DIRECTV! You rule.

Just a note on box rental fees.

Here in my local area it is something like this for Charter Cable:

Standard Box: $5
HD Box: $10
DVR Box (I think they only have HD DVR): $15

So if you sign a new two year contract and pay up front $200 and then only $5 a month for an HR24 you actually come out $40 ahead over if DTV had this pricing model.

Now, having said that, it would be nice if DTV offered some different pricing models. i.e. new receiver for 4 installments of $50 or whatever.
