Are the only benefits of the protection plan Free shipping on exchanges, my 4 year old 622's hard drive shot craps and I called them and they rushed me out a new one for $15 shipping since I didnt have the protection plan , no big deal since it would be $72 a year for the plan. Just wondering ...

If you need a service call, without the plan the price is $95, with the plan $15 in most cases.

Some people like it, some (like me) have never purchased the plan. But I also don't buy extended warranties, etc.
