I recently replaced an HR20-700 with an HR24-500. The hard drive on the HR24-500 makes a constant clicking sound while my HR20-700 was very quiet. I am enjoying the speed of the HR24-500 but the hard drive is annoying. I am wondering from others whether or not this is normal or did I get a bad unit. Thanks.

How recently? DIRECTV DVRs will be a little louder the first couple of days in general, but if you're still hearing something after 3-4 days, I'm surprised. My HR24 is silent and my hearing's really sensitive.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect

It was installed Tuesday so maybe you are correct that it will go away away soon. I definitely hope you are correct. Thanks.

I can't remember ever hearing anything other than very faint fan noise from my HR24; it is really, really quiet. So quiet that SWMBO decreed that a HR20-700 has got to be replaced with another HR24.

I had to Google that.

EDIT: And there's a good reason I didn't know what it stood for. ;)

I got a defective HR24-500, too (though I had a different problem), and mine was replaced immediately through the local installers with another HR24-500. I was told this was possible because the defect came to light within 7 days from the initial install. Moral: don't wait long to complain about the clicking.

My HR24 is very quiet. The only time I hear it, is when it boots up the fan kicks on for a brief moment. My HR21, on the other hand you can hear.

I got a HR24 yesterday. Can't hear a thing. Neither can my wife and if she can't hear it then it's not making any noise.

The culprit was a fan going bad in my Samsung HL61A750 HDTV. The fan started making noises the same time I got the HR24-500 so I assumed it was the DVR. The DVR is also right under the portion of the TV where the fan is located. I have ordered a new fan for my TV. Sorry for the false alarm.

hmmm, got mine Wednesday, and the HD whine is definitely noticeable. It's louder than my HR20.

I'll give it till next week and then see.

You're HR24s are noisy?
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

It certainly was the first day. Loud enough to make me notice and hope it would quiet down. Although I have the same TV as the OP, the noise is present when the TV is off.

OK, here's a video of the HR24. I took it with a flip recorder so the microphone not the best quality (and in fact there seems to be an intermittent buzzing on each video), but the comparison should give you an idea of the noise it is making.

For comparison, here is my HR20. It's not in a cabinet, but the noise levels are about the same as when it was.

And finally, here is an iMac (yes it is on, just the monitor is asleep)

I apologize for the stupid buzzing on the flip recorder, I never noticed that before. But you can hear the device noises anyway.
