Switching from dish today. Went to local showroom yesterday (1 Hr drive) worth every minute. Got to play with all the new equipment, check everything out, ask all my questions, and they will be here today. Getting 2 Hr24s and 1 SD receiver, MRV, and internet connected. Cost me $100. They even applied my refer a friend discount, so all I had to do when I got home was apply for the rebates. Much better than trying to do it over the phone. They told me not to sign up for protection plan just call them for problems and they will come out for no charge. Also said if box or remote go bad just stop in and they will swap it out free. Got it all in writing, very excited can't wait. Well worth traveling and doing business with the locals.

Where did you go? I'm in Northern New York and my nephew's in Western New York. Maybe when I visit my nephew, I can visit the showroom.

I hope you were able to get this discount. In the past D* has been very strict on using a special phone# for sign-up to receive that discount. It also requires that you have the account # of the referrering friend. Just curious, how did you apply for the discount at home? Inquiring minds want to know.;)

Odds are you won't get the refer a friend (whether it's in writing or not).

In all liklihood, they just knocked off $100, and you got a great deal.

Your friend won't get their $100 credit ($10/month for 10 months).
The only way your friend gets it is if you call the Referral 800 number and give them the account number.

Your friend counting on the $100 will probably be disappointed.

Satellite Solutions put in the $10 refer a friend, then I got an account # went home applied for the rebates. It looks like I'm getting all discounts. Bill is 46.07 for (2) HR24s and (1) SD, MRV and Choice Ultimate. Starz and Showtime for 3 months free. Last bill from Dish was 79.59 for 1 duel dvr and 1 duel tuner without HD and about the same programing. I do have one problem though, 1 HR reads the others recordings fine, but the other 1 only shows only what was recorded on it, and says no networked dvrs found. Any ideas?

Local DTV dealers can participate in the Refer a Friend program and it works just as it does when calling the 800 number. All you need is your friends DTV account # when you order your service.

Ladies and Gentlemen, support your local DirecTV dealers!!!!!

Interesting. My friend did that with a local dealer and he got $100 off instantly and I got nothing. When I called Directv they told me what I originally posted. This was four months ago.

Directv ended up giving me free this and that for six months to make me whole but as usual, two different answers to the same problem when dealing with CSR's and other folks.

I have always recommended visiting a local sat store or otherwise contacting them directly. I did so when, as a satellite virgin, I went to a local dealer, bought two early PVRs (Dish 7200s), got an excellent install, and at an apartment at that, and good followup service afterward (installer forgot to ground). It was that initial showroom visit in 2000 that sold me on the DVR concept.

EDIT: After I retired and moved to the coast in 2002, I even had that well-known satellite installer extraordinaire, Mr. Richard King travel thousands of miles to put his personal stamp of approval on a subsequent pole install, my infamous "Dish Tree'. It's been ten years now since my first, and even though I now have cable, I have not been without DVR capability since and, hopefully, never will!

Also said if box or remote go bad just stop in and they will swap it out free. Got it all in writing, very excited can't wait.

Congratulations on your switch!

Once activated, if you have a box go bad it's my understanding that it would have to be returned to DirecTV or you would be subject to a non-Return Fee (in the nieghborhood of $400 for an HD DVR if I recall correctly). These units are all leased from DirecTV and they require you return them when they are deactivated (for whatever reason). I would not bring a defective box to the installer and leave it there. They may be able to get something working if it's something easy, but they shouldn't be opening up the unit to attempt repairs or anything like that. I would not let them swap a box out and keep the old one.

FWIW, it seems like the re-seller is doing everything it can to avoid a charge back due to customer ignorance. (meaning, un-educated about Directv's workings) I don't blame them.

Also, when I just got mrv and 2 new h24's installed, the sub on the job was to recover the old D12 I was swapping out. I even asked a Directv csr about this when we were on the phone doing a work modification. So, maybe that means the re-seller can swap out boxes.

+1. We had a real good one here but they went belly-up a couple of years ago.:( Havn't been able to find one since.:(

I'm glad to see local dealers are trying to offer expanded services and do the right thing. I just wonder come January with snow everywhere how anxious they are going to be to drive an hour for a free service call.:eek2:;);)
