KRCB Channel 22 - PBS station in SF Bay Area is now showing HD in the guide for selected programs. Is this new, I don't remember it being HD and the chart shows it as only underlined.

Thanks, I'd found post 713 but I was confused by the first line (No good news), I thought it applied to everything so I assumed KRCB was test only.

Are you asking which Satellite is steaming Meridian Data, or are you asking if some specific individuals are "testing" the Meridian info.

#2 first No, *TEST means signal in data stream but not authorized for general usage. Directv receivers with "engineering access card" can see the signals

#1 is in gct DATA here:

http://www.dbstalk.c...ad.php?t=198232

Signals are on Spaceway 2 at 99 degrees (99s) TPN #5

So I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and was in Japan in late Oct/early Nov. During my trip, NHK World moved from 26-2 to 38-4. (So I came home, went to watch an episode of a show some friends said they were on and... realized I didn't have that!).

I checked my built-in TV Tuner and I can watch 38-4 directly on the TV, but it's an off-air channel not added to the guide which means I can't watch it/DVR anything on DirecTV. Not the end of the world or anything, just annoying...

Is there a specific method for contacting DirecTV and requesting this channel be added to the SF area off-air guide?

Anybody know what "The Next 10" means on the original page 1 listing under HD-LILs? My DMA124 Monterey-Salinas is listed in it, but "The Next 10" could mean anything--bad communication skills on somebody's part. There certainly has been no announcement of any plans to bring HD LILs to this locality.

Maruuk,
Sorry, but as the EDIT on post #1 says, none of the post #1 data has been updated since September, 2010. Everything is very much out of date. We hope to have other folks pick up this thread and bring it up to current status. That is pending.

You might watch the "TPN Map..." thread in the DIRECTV Tips and Resources Forum. That data is updated weekly. If anything happens in the LIL world, Doctor J will be there to let you know immediately.

Checking the TPN Map Excel file, Monterey is still one of 13 DMA's with SD Locals only. I do not believe there have been any announcements yet on the DIRECTV website regarding LIL activity for 2012. And don't ask: I have no idea why Monterey, at DMA #125, is still waiting for HD LILs while 58 other *smaller* DMA's already have HD LILs. (Yes, you are DMA #125; you dropped one slot in the 2012 Nielsen standings.)

Again - keep watching Doctor J's posts....

Unfortunately, head-scratching probably won't offer many answers. You can be sure the 'snub' is a technological conundrum for DIRECTV. For DIRECTV, the biggest bang for the buck is the larger DMA's.

If you have the time and interest, do some research for all of us. Check out those 58 other HD LIL DMAs that are all lower on the totem pole; see what Sats and TPNs provide those 58 HD LILs. Are they all East Coast DMA's? What is the common thread? Somewhere, your answer is waiting to be discovered. The various 'sheets' of the TPN Map Excel should provide all the raw data you need.

It will be interesting to hear what you discover!

Well, D* promised that 99% of all DMAs would have HD LILs by the end of 2011. That proved to be wildly off-base. I think we're dealing with a combination of cost-effectiveness (bang-for-customer) and which DMA's have some existing OTA HD service. We do have some here, though PBS is super weak and drops out when it gets merely cloudy. I've taken to buying Downton Abbey eps on iTunes whenever it clouds up on a Sunday.

Just noticed this morning that we have a channel 14 I'm pretty sure that it's really a sub-channel of channel 13. As with an OTA antenna it shows as 13-2, but Directv has designated it channel 14. It's the MY network. btw It's not HD, but at least it's something new !

I just stumbled upon your (mis)statement on the Directv website, whilst checking for announcements of any new LIL markets (sadly, there are no new entries at this time.)

Anyway -- the website statement is, "Directv provides HD Locals to 99.4% of all U.S. homes" at the close of 2011. That is a very different than your interpretation of, "... 99% of all DMA's".

Actually, 181 of 212 DMA's have HD Locals. That is 85% of all DMAs. But those remaining 31 DMAs in aggregate only represent 0.6% of all U.S. homes. (My arithmetic.) Looking at it another way: those 31 DMAs in aggregate are about equal to the Austin, TX DMA.

On the other hand, us here at 125 ought to be way ahead of a lot of higher numbers that got it a long time ago. The bitter reality is assuaged by clever guerrilla tactics. Tomorrow night I'll miss Downton Abbey since it'll be cloudy and wimpy PBS ch. 25.1 will disappear off my OTA receiver. But I discovered I can download it from iTunes Monday morning. And frankly, the 720p from iTunes looks way better than the 1080i from PBS. Go figure.

How can this be true when all you would have to do is combine two of the DMAs without locals in HD, Eugene and Lansing, to equal Austin? Throw in Bakersfield and you have far more households than Austin, and you still have 28 to go.

So are Portland, ME locals on 99, or 103 (It lists both)? 35 (My Network) is in HD, isn't it?

I can confirm that WPME, channel 35, in the Portland/Auburn, ME area, IS in HD on Directv (But not Dish). This came from an email I received from Doug Finck, General Manager at WPME. As to which bird it's on though, he's not sure.

Uncertain as to what you are looking up.

You are right. This time I had Excel do the arithmetic:

Total Nielsen Households, 2012: 114,649,310

HD Locals|181 DMAs|111,138,840|96.9% of US
SD Locals Only|15 DMAs|2,772,730|2.42% of US
No Locals|16 DMAs|737,740|0.64% of US

Sum of SD Locals Only, Plus No Locals At All
No HD Locals|31 DMAs|3,510,470|3.06% of US

Sum of HD Locals and SD Locals
Have Locals|196 DMAs|113,911,570|99.36% of US
