HR24-500

Random OTA recordings are blank, while NO sat recordings are blank. AM21 setup worked flawlessly with HR22 for 5 months. Trickplay on OTA recordings is also a tad buggy, with audio dropouts and xtra jumps forward or backward. None of which I see on Sat recordings.

I am having exactly the same issue with two HR24's. An OTA recording immediately jumps to the keep or delete screen. No issues with an HR20 with built in OTA tunere or with my HR22/Am21 STB's. Fortunately I am able to record from the satellite feeds and only use the OTA in "Rain Fade" situations.

I'm not saying people aren't having problems with OTA recordings on the HR24's, but I have 2 connected to AM21's and both are able to receive and record OTA without problems. I just tested tuning 2 OTA stations and recording one last night - no issues here and nothing special about my setup.

Are you a heavy user? I've heard this comment before until they really started testing. It's not every one, it's RANDOM. I record 15-20 hours per week off locals, and 1-4 per week were blank.

If the worst case you all are seeing is 25% of OTA recordings blank and a little funkiness with trickplay, that's actually kind of a relief. Certainly it is not acceptable long term, but it is better than my HR24-100's seeming inability to successfully tune 2 OTA channels at the same time without picture and sound breaking up on both.

Sometimes I wish watching TV wasn't so much work.

Yeah, it could be worse. We stay 1-2 weeks behind sometimes, and it really sucks getting to something a week old and finding it blank. Which is why I swapped to recording HD sat feeds for locals. It works fine for live tv.

I understand - we've had lots of problems lately with both sat and ota recordings being blank or glitchy on our main DVR. I think and hope it was just the box (one of the early HR20-700s) going bad. After changing out the LNB, multiswitch, external drive, and BBCs without fixing the problem, I grudgingly let go of it when the tech had this HR24 to replace it.

Fortunately, we've been able to use Apple TV to get most of the shows we weren't able to watch on the DVR. Paying $3 to Apple every time the DVR screws up is not great, though.

Yeah, I use Amazon VOD on my BR player, and it was getting irritating spending $1.99 a couple of times per week after paying D* $80.

Just wanted to report back in.

Got an HR24-500 activated today and it is definitely not having the same OTA issues as the HR24-100.

To recap, the HR24-100 seems unable to tune two OTA channels at the same time (e.g. doubleplay, record one OTA while watching another OTA live). If I attempt this, the picture on both OTA channels will break up and pixelate as if it is not getting all the bits it needs to maintain the picture. It works fine tuning one OTA channel at a time.

Swapping the HR24-100 out for the 500 using the same AM21 and same antenna connection, the HR24-500 is able to tune two OTA channels at once using double-play or record two OTA channels at the same time. (It did freeze on me once, but that's not the same issue.)

So, either I have an isolated problem with a brand new HR24-100 or there is a software or hardware issue with the HR24-100 that makes it unable to tune two OTA channels at the same time without causing the picture to break up.

Interesting, but my 500 is a random OTA blanker, so I still think both models had OTA issues. Record off AM21 at your own risk right now.

I set up a bunch of OTA to record this afternoon and tonight just for testing. I'll let you know what I find as soon as I have a large enough sample to be meaningful.
