Well my wife and I finally got fed up with the loud grinding noises our old HR20-700 made in our master bedroom. Having the protection plan, I called DirecTv and with no problems got another receiver sent to us. I open up the box yesterday to find it is a refurbished HR 20-700. I have personally had very little luck with refurbished electronics, but I hooked it up and activated it last night. Well, about half way through the night, I had to unplug it because it is just as loud as the other one. The hard drive is constantly running and about every 10 seconds it makes this loud hard drive seeking sound. It also makes this loud click/pop sound about every 10 minute or so.

I can understand why they give out refurbished units, but in my opinion, if I am ponying up the money for this protection plan, just give me a new box. So, I guess I will be back on the phone to see what I can be done.

I will say that this is the first equipment issue I have had in over 6 years of being a customer, but was not happy I have been paying $6 a month to only guarantee me a refurb unit.

I would like to see a show of hands of anyone who has ever gotten a brand new replacement with an electronics warranty, no lemon policy excluded.

As for getting a bad replacement, it happens all too often seems like, but there are also thousands of refurbs going strong out there. Call and complain, they will send other out...

Call and ask that you be escalated to a case manager that can ensure you a working receiver. They still can't guarantee you a 24 series or brand new but I've seen Case Management do some crazy things.

Last year I had 3 receivers replaced within a span of 6 weeks. They just kept failing, until this last one. This refurb is working great. Sometimes I think they don't even "test" the units returned to D*...

I received a refurb HR20-700 and it was still being paid for by the person that returned it! Getting it activated was some fun.:)

That said, it has worked perfectly for two years. No complaints whatsoever.

I guess I lucked out with my HR20 and the protection plan. D* sent a tech out to check it and immediatly said the HR20 was bad and installed me a new HR24. When I called D* I mentioned I would like to get a new HR24 if possible and her response was it depended on what the D* service person had.

Did you have the option of D* service checking your issue out?

Is it normal for them to replace a receiver due to the HDD making noise if its working properly other then being loud? I have a HR20-100 that was provided at install time 2 years ago that I have never had a problem with. Its a refurb as well but I just bought a owned HR20-700 that is the loudest thing I have ever heard. I figured I was stuck with it until it died and then I could use the PP.

The HR21 I received a few years back was a refurb and its perfect. Its so quiet that in spite of the slowness I've kept it and use it in the master bedroom.

Just a follow up. Finally got around to calling DirecTV. Since my post, the receiver has also started to make intermittent loud popping/cracking sounds. Not sure what that could be. Anyway, I got elevated to a case manager. They were kind, courteous, and without fuss said they are sending another receiver. I really don't care what model I get, as long as I don't have to unplug it at night just to sleep. :)

Good to hear they are taking care of it (as they should).

The model is indeed secondary to having one the works properly.

Well today I received a HR20-100 as a replacement. Not sure what the difference is between the 100 and 700 model, but the important thing is the 100 unit is very quiet. Granted, it has been activated just a few hours, but it is already a vast improvement from what we have dealt with.

You do care. You don't want another HR20. You want anything else. This is a known problem with many HR20s. Not ALL of them though, so wait a few days and see if your new HR20 is OK.

If you need OTA channels, also insist on a free AM21, since the other models don't have ATSC tuners.

There aint nothing wrong with the HR20's. I would perfer them over a HR21 for sure and probably a HR22 or 23 as well.
