Did anyone else catch the DirecTV commercial comparing their number of HD channels vs. E* at the end of Mad Men? I had to laugh, even my wife commented on it.

Disclaimer: Not whining, I know it will get here when it gets here. Just the irony of it all.

As long as you watch the show on the dvr by 3am its still counted in that rating just as if you watched it "live".

Yes, but I bet if you watch at 3 AM, or even 2 AM, that you don't watch commercials, and that message is getting to advertisers, so again, the current broadcast model is not going to last much longer. Also, note the posts on legal downloads from Amazon and iTunes.................

Would be good to have a reliable source, as opposed to the rumor mill repeated on a website. ;):D

Nothing new in Swanni's statement. Most folks knew negotiations were underway for a while already.

If a price point can be reached in those discussions...you'll see AMC HD soon enough thereafter. Also nothing new there.

2.918 million viewers & 0.9 in 18-49.

So still hasnt cracked the 1.0.

Check the Sopranos ratings, before the proliferation of online content, 18-49 wasn't terribly impressive, would you argue that it wasn't a successful entity? Again, Mad Men is dominating iTunes and amazon, would think that those trend to the younger side.

But sopranos was on a pay channel with alot less audience reach tham amc so naturally the ratings would be lower anyways.

Didn't say they were lower, just that the 18-49 was a small part of overall ratings, about one-fourth, in an age when online accessibility was virtually non existent.

Mad Men appeals to a very select audience and attracts viewers that are extremely attractive to advertisers. 3 million desirable viewers is better than 6 million of which 5 million are lowest common denominator.

Many of whom can afford dvr's and skip commercials. Within a few years the whole audience thing will be largely meaningless, if you have a dvr you can turn it on 15 minutes late, miss the commercials and still finish at about the same time.

But it got a 0.9 in 18-49 (the desired demo) & thats about 1.2 million viewers not 3 million.

Look, clearly there's a market for the show because AMC keeps making it. So the advertising money must be worth it. Now, as to why it's not HD yet... I don't know what to tell you. Someone's playing hardball.

Maybe they all downloaded it in HD? There is evidence to support that theory.

Hey, we can turn down the color on our TVs, and with an overcompressed SD picture, imagine we're seeing the same sort of quality that Don gets on the tube in his apartment. Gets one into the period "feel." :)

We've had VCRs for a long time and advertising is still going strong.

Equipment includes a buncha stuff that I no longer have interest in detailing

well, I watched some things via vcr and did skip through commercials. I got my first dvr about 5 years ago, and now except for the daily show and occasionally the morning news, I have not seen commercials for five years. I do not think I am alone.

The only exception is the very obvious product placement ads one sees occasionally, e.g., one for a Toyota Corolla in a mystery show, I think, "In Plain Sight."
