Getting ready to call D* and want to make sure I connect to the right department to get the best deal instead of dealing with somebody that has zero authority to do it. I have been with D* for 4 years and have a monthly bill of about $110 and have a HR20 and R15.

Want to upgrade my system to the following:
Replace my HR20 with the new HR24
Replace my R15 with the new R16
Add another HR24
Add NFLST
Add HBO
Add MRV

Any pointers?

Thanks s much in advance for any input!

Ask all you want for HR24...It won't matter. You get whatever they've got.
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

huh? if I am ordering MRV don't I have to get the HR24?

when I am online and I "add equipment" it looks like a HR24 in the picture with the description. What would they send instead?

No.

They will gladly upgrade you to compatible equipment. If you want a specific model, you can acquire one from a retailer. The HR24's are not required.

From DirecTV's website:

What do I need for Multi-Room HD DVR service to work?

You need an HD DVR* (models HR20-23) and at least one compatible HD receiver (models H21-23) that are already networked, along with HD Access and DVR service.

You will either get an HR20, HR22, HR23, or HR24. All will work just fine.

No, but doing so increases the offs of getting the HR24.

They won't replace the receivers unless there's something wrong with them. You can just call the main number and tell them you want to add HBO, NFLST, and MRV.

I'm sure Directv can't wait to get their hands on your unit.

Not if he has existing equipment. They're not going to replace his HR20 because he's ordering MRV.

Ok, so the million dollar question is when does the HR24 become the standard that is being sent out? I do not care to play receiver roulette knowing that there are 4 models that are "HD DVR" yet the latest and greatest (the HR24) isn't a sure thing. Not going to pay the same price for a "chance" to get the best receiver only to be disappointed knowing I got a substandard receiver compared to what is available.

When they don't have any of the others left. That will probably be a couple of years and by then there'll probably be something better than the HR24.

Just go buy one. Amazon has them for $185 right now, IIRC.

My bet is within the next 90 days, assuming you are also adding MRV, which you would be doing. Now that there are 3 companies making them, the HR24 should be in good supply down the road. I say within 90 days but we all know the fall is a higher TV watching time, which could push DirecTV's "flushed with HR24s" condition maybe into winter.

Everyone seems to be missing this piece:

Not if he has existing equipment. They're not going to replace his HR20 because he's ordering MRV.

Even if HR24's were all they had, they're not going to replace an HR20 for an existing customer on an MRV install.

Ok, so then let me ask this since it seems I can order from Amazon for $185. I don't mind doing that. If I grab 2 HR24's from Amazon, can I just tell D* to turn off my HR20 and then send it back to them? I guess at that point my only problem is getting the install done since I can't imagine Amazon is telling D* that I just bought it and to send out an installer.

Good point, spartanstew. I was thinking of the second HR24 he wanted to add.

But talking with an installer yesterday, we were both betting rather than using all the extra parts necessary to hook up a HR20-700 or HR20-100 for SWiM and DECA, at some point soon DirecTV will say its cheaper to retire a DVR that has already been internally depreciated down to zero on their books and use a HR24 instead. The installer and I were guessing, and it is purely a guess, that this might be a year out.

Order the HR24's from Amazon. Hook them up. Deactivate the HR20 and send back to D*. Call D* and purchase MRV, they'll send out an installer to hook you up.

Don't deactivate the HR20, unless there is a problem with it. Use it to replace the R15 as long as your getting the two HR24's.

996911, can I assume you are off of contract?

If so, do what alneilson suggests regarding your R15/HR20 and try Retention at DirecTV. You might get the two DVRs and MRV for free, and credits against HBO and Sunday Ticket.

I would assume I am off contract since I had the install almost 4 years ago and have not had any equipment added or promos that would trigger a commitment. Would I be able to see this in my online D* profile?

A front line CSR should be able to tell you if you are on contract. You almost have to go through that step before saying "retention" in the voice prompts. Call and ask a front line CSR about your status. Tell them you are looking to re-up and want all of this stuff for free. I'm pretty sure you won't get it from that person, but again, it's part of the process. Wait a bit and call back again, this time asking for retention. Those folks can work magic to keep a no hassle, profitable customer like yourself.

Also you should note the R16 you are planning on adding isn't MRV compatible. Shoot for another HR2x or even an H24 to replace it. While an H24 will not have local storage it will have access to view/record on your other HR's
