installer made it sound as though once the guide data was done downloading on the HR24 (via internet), I could just unplug it permanently and the WHDVR would work. So, not only do I need to permanently remove the connection, I should hard restart (red button?); or soft reset (via guide)?

Is the ICK worth investing in- ie is the on demand service worth the added costs/wires/headache, etc? (obviously a subjective answer, but still...)

A restart won't do. Sat setup will need to be redone after the ethernet cable is pulled. It will need to remain disconnected as long as you want to use WHDVR.

As for the ICK. Just a matter of personal preference. Some like the addition of the DoD offerings and internet apps. Others, not so much. It's also hard to say what it may or may not be used for in the future.

I know this is a dumb question....how do I redo the sat setup?

Will I turn around and lose all the guide date I just "downloaded" by doing so? Or anything I recorded?

Red button reboot (after unhooking Ethernet) did the trick
