Lifetime Tivo/DVR

Does one have to have an actual TIVO DVR one their account to continue to get free lifetime DVR service? I am down to one HR10-250 and would like to replace it with a Directv DVR but I don't want to lose the lifetime service. I thought it is now called lifetime DVR which would mean no, but I am not sure.

I have lifetime DVR as well and have not had any Tivo on my account in years. I have all hr2x units. It was rebranded lifetime Directv DVR service years ago so you are ok. It does NOT cover MRV though. Also, if/when the new Directv Tivo unit comes out, I am not sure if it will cover it.

As long as you maintain your account, the Lifetime DVR service will remain. The actual quantity of folks who qualified for this was so small (relatively speaking) that I don't think this will ever be changed within DIRECTV. If you close your account and then return later, then you will have to pay the fee again.

Thanks. It was money well spent whenever I got it (1997 or so).

Doug that is not suppose to be the case. In the terms they sent out when they changed it to lifetime directv service, it specifically stated that you would maintain lifetime service if you left and came back. Now in reality, it might be difficult, but since it is in writting, they would have to eventually honor it.

I believe the main reasons DirecTV stopped offering it was because of this situation. They realised that when they offered it, it was per account not receiver.

I do not remember what I paid in 1999 but something says it was around $199 and I figure I recouped that sometime in 2002.
Occasionally, someone at DirecTV will make a mistake and start charging me for DVR service again so my suggestion to everyone who has lifetime service is double check your bill now and then. My folks on the other hand are not very technical and had no idea that DirecTV made this same mistake which resulted in over 3 years of being charged wrongly. Luckily, after a few phone calls, DirecTV fixed the problem and credited them back every penny.

I believe it was $250, or at least that's what I paid. Either way it was a great deal.

I could be mistaken since it's been so long. But I'm pretty sure I remember setting up a TiVo account and paying TiVo $199 for lifetime of the receiver.

I bought a new Sony SAT T-60 and activated it with DirecTV. Then I had to setup an account with TiVO. I figured I'd own the box for more than 20 months (monthly fee was $10 at that time), so I paid the lifetime.

I forget when it happened, but when DirecTV took over the DVR service maybe a year or so later. They attached the lifetime to my account instead of per receiver like it was with TiVo.

After DirecTV picked up the DVR service for TiVos, I added a Philips TiVo model and eventually replaced both with R10s. Now I'm on HR22s.

Needless to say, that $199 has more than paid for itself. Having DVR lifetime on my DirecTV account and only paying $5 for an extra HD receiver are just a few reasons Cable and FiOS would cost more for me if I looked at the total cost of service.

I heard that grandfathered Primestar customers don't pay for the extra receiver fee. Is that true?

As long as you keep the same account, that may be true, but many people would likely still opt for the "new customer" discounts instead. The Lifetime Service is applicable ONLY to the actual account that it was originally associated with and yes, I've found DIRECTV to be very accommodating with this service and generally does the right thing regardless of the situation. The hard part is sometimes getting it corrected as it's been so long since it was offered that not many CSRs really know about it any more.

Man I wish I had gotten in on that deal. I am new at this, but I don't plan on going anywhere for quite some time. $7 a month (or more in the future probably) would really add up over the service period I will most likely have!

Actually it was Oct. 2000. I had the Hughes GXCEBOT installed in Mar. 2001 and opted for Lifetime because I knew it was going up to $249 in April. Dual tuners were activated that Summer.

Ceton 6 tuner eth, Cisco Tuning Adapter 1520, TWC Digital Explorer Pak and Standard cInternet, TiVo HD (upgraded to 500 GB) for OTA,TC-P50U50, SONY NSZ-GT1 BD player and Google TV box, Yamaha RX-V373 A/V receiver, Squeezebox Duet music streaming device

If this had been continued, the payback period would likely be somewhere between 40-50 months (3.5 years).

I bought it way back when and am still a customer, so I suppose from that perspective, it is a good deal at this point. :)

I got my lifetime TiVo around 2000 or 2001 for $249, I think. At one point I sold that box and acquired a Philips DSR704 box (also a TiVo unit). At that time I had to start paying the DVR fee; I think this was in 2004. Then we also got an HR20 in 2007.

A year or so ago, I was notified that I should not have been paying the monthly DVR fee since my account was flagged as once having purchased lifetime TiVo coverage. I received a credit for over $300 and had no bill for four months. Since then I've not paid a monthly DVR charge.
