This past week I called dtv about getting another receiver for the basement. Two years ago they did a free swap for my HR10-250 and gave me a free HR21-100. I moved my old HR10-250 to the basement. So I called last Monday to see what kind of offers they had going. CSR told me they would knock off $50.00 for being a long time sub. Said ok and i would think about it. The next day i called about the HD for life and the guy i got said he could do that and it would be no problem. While I had him on the phone i asked about a receiver for the basement. He looked up my account said thanks for being a loyal customer and he would send one out for free. I asked him if i had to take a two year commitment to get that for free. He said no and it was no problem. It just freaks me out how some csr throw out free stuff and others don't. Any how I thought i would share this. I have ota hook up and i got a refurbished HR20-700. Which is what i wanted. I'm still a happy customer.

Despite what the CSR said I bet you get tagged with a new two year commitment.

Is this considered an upgrade? If so, I would bet there is a new 2 year commitment.

Yes, read the leased equipment addendum of the customer agreement. Despite what the CSR said, the equipment came with a 2 year commitment.

Upgrade or not there will be a 2 year extension. it's very hard if not impossible to get around that one when you lease a box.

OK...but recently, I too swapped a HR10-250, for a free HR20-100...with NO new two-year contract extension.

Note the OP had a HR10-250, like I did.

...and my SD locals are still available in MPEG2, BTW.

What's an MPG swap?

Like when you switch from a full size crew cab F350 to a Civic. You get better MPG so it's an MPG swap?

I don't know.....

Also note he had already received a free upgrade for that HR10-250, but he chose to keep it. He should not have been given another free upgrade for the same HR10-250, that would be double-dipping, and should not have been allowed. A scam by shady customers, just like the guy who is still buying HR10's cheap on eBay today, then tomorrow trying to get D* to give them a free upgrade to MPEG4 equipment since the HR10 is obsolete for Sat HD programming.

Bottom Line: When talking with a csr get their name and ID number. That way you will have a reference to what was agreed to and stated.

They obviously don't care or they would reclaim the boxes or at least blacklist the RIDs. It's just another box out making money to them I'll bet.

Well this is what you said in your post....

"Two years ago they did a free swap for my HR10-250 and gave me a free HR21-100. I moved my old HR10-250 to the basement."

So you didn't really swap you just received an additional free HR21-100 and moved the HR10-250 to your basement, right? Now you are calling back in and saying I have this old HR10-250, what can I get for it? So are you even swapping the HR10-250 now or will you really now have 3 receivers, HR 10, HR 21, and HR 20?

Maybe we're misunderstanding what you really did in your first 'swap'.

The language used when replacing an HR10-250 with a new DVR is crucial WRT the two year commitment. I was told that if it is called an "exchange" there is no commitment, if it somehow gets entered in the system as an "upgrade" it will.
When news breaks...we fix it.

...and was paying D* an additional $5 a month, when he reactivated the HR10-250.

Most "loyal customers" can get an additional HD-DVR for $99 (or free with the right CSR). So, if he was reusing the HR10-250 for 20 months before upgrading again, he would have covered the $99 discounted lease price.

Is it double-dipping, yes. Is D* losing money? No.

That was my question really in post 3. Was this really considered an upgrade going from an HR to another HR?

Here's the thing with the MPEG swap stuff. When a hr10 or r10 ird is swapped it is flagged in the back end of the account so that it cannot be swapped out again for free (which would be fraud). So you actually its likly that you got a Loyal Customer free upgrade not a MPEG Swap
