Just got a computer call from Directv , it's a follow up call for a service call.
The call went like this "to continue in English press 1." Are they joking or what? This is American so I hung up immediately.

Everyone in America must speak English? You realize many Americans speak Spanish better than English?
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

I could make so many jokes about your post.

Ok - here's one. You misspelled "America", for crying out loud.

camo, oh camo... It's a wise business today that caters to the Spanish-speaking market in the USA. It's a large demographic and it's a good demographic.

So why not say for Spanish press 1? This is America not Spain or Mexico.

Maybe they did do that but people complained, telling them English was no.1 in the US, so they changed to "English press 1?" :)

For anyone lucky enough to have parents > 70 years old, ask them what the culture of language was like in the USA in the 30's and 40's.

Heck, even as a kid, this 50 year old had houses in the neighborhood where the older folks only spoke Italian, Polish, German, etc...

I work with a bunch of folks from India. Trust me, their kids speak the same English you and I do without any accent.

The USA is a great country, and our diversity is one of the major reasons why.

This thread is a powder keg in a rainless lightning storm.

I agree with the op, but I dont feel like elaborating and being the spark that sets it off.

English should be the default choice. Press 2 for Spanish.

I cheated my way through two years of spanish in high school. If I recall right, most of those "for english, press 1" messages are followed by "for spanish, press 9". Some phone systems just give the usual introduction and then insturct "for spanish, press 2", with no chice for english, making it the default.

The call did come in English, did it not? So isn't English the default choice?

Imagine if you had to listen to the call in Spanish and then wait for the English version. If there was no choice to press 1, then you would have to wait for all of the prompts before getting connected.
