I would like to buy a new HR24 and replace my HR20-700. Can I just buy the receiver and activate it? Then ask for a box to send my HR20 back? There is nothing wrong with the HR20 I just want the HR24 in black.

yes, you can get an HR24, activate it and deactivate the HR20. When you deactivate the HR20, DirecTV will send a box with a shipping label to return the HR20 to them.

If you don't get the box within a week, you will want to call back, or email to make sure they shipped it, as sometimes the return request doesn't process properly the first time in the DirecTV system.

Just as a reminder, activating a new, leased box that is not a defective receiver replacement will reset your two year commitment.

Today's problems don't worry me, I haven't solved yesterday's yet.

If you are deactivating a HR20-700, Directv may not require it back. When I called to do that, the CSR said it now showed up on my account as owned (YMMV).
