That BS call at the end of the Lions/bears game was about as bad as I have seen in 30+ years of watching sports.

Yet another reason why I so strongly prefer college football to the NFL.

Yepper. Wont send any of my money to support that...and I'm not even a Lions fan.

After they screwed up that pitchers perfect game, and refused to reverse the call even after the umpire admitted he blew the call, I stopped watching MLBEI too, even though I am still paying for it. 2011 will be my first year since DirecTv came out that I will not have ANY pro sports subscriptions. Replay and bad officiating and overpriced players, and druggies have taken all the fun out of it. Give me college, high school, or Little League any time.

The rule was followed. He didn't maintain possession.
If you stop responding to them or put them on ignore, then eventually they'll go away.

Looked like he maintained possession to me, the entire time until he got up and started celebrating after seeing the official standing 10 feet from him signal a touchdown. Guess he needs to hold on to the ball and carry it over to the official and present it to him as a gift now, with that rule... Bet next time he catches a pass in the endzone, he maintains possession until it disappears in the officials rear.

Agreed, it's one of those weird interpretation rules.

Its still crap. He has both feet in bounds and position of the ball in the end zone. It should of been a TD.

I could care less about football in general and the Lions in particular but I did see that replay and it was a baaaaaaaad call. I also agree with the Gallaraga perfect game fiasco. Changing that last play from a hit to an out would not have changed anything else other than removing a hitless at bat from the next batter up, who ended the game.

For me personally, although I've loved baseball since 1961, I've been fed up with the prima donna overpaid a-hole athletes and the whole corporatization of the sport. I was totally disgusted to see a video put online of Mary Cary the porn slut that she shot while in Melky Cabrera's hotel room. If it wasn't for my mentally handicapped son suddenly becoming a super Yankee fan I'd have stopped watching 4 years ago. Plus the fact, and I know this sounds racist but I don't care, but I feel like I'm watching Mexican League baseball now. 80% of the players are hispanic.

I'm more than happy to go to Charlotte Knight minor league games. It's family friendly and a fun time.

The receiver was DOWN when his ass hit the ground. Saying he needed to keep the ball when he got up is effing retarded. F*** the NFL. I hope the lock out lasts for 10 years.

And obviously I'm venting here so spare me the logic and reason.

I agree. In my eyes, he had control and possession of the ball.

According to the rules though, possession must be maintained throughout the duration of the "catch" process. Falling on the ground while attempting to catch a ball is part of the catch process.

I saw this play on the Red Zone Channel on DirecTV and they had a former NFL lead official explain the definition of possession as it pertains to completing a catch, which I totally disagreed with.

By his definition, it would mean to me that if a receiver catches the ball at the ten yard line, for example, but lost his footing and stumbled ten yards across the goal line, while NOT juggling the ball in any way, yet fell to the ground, which then causes the ball to be dislodged from his hand(s), then it would be an incomplete pass.

To me, the play that happened today was similar to my above example, but instead of going ten yards, you only went a couple, while maintaining full control and possession of the football.

Not the worst call I've ever seen... and even though I feel for Detroit, I think the rule was probably applied technically correctly.

It is kind of a crap rule though...

I just finally got to see the replay (I was traveling during the game)...

It was a catch, Detroit should have been kicking the extra point for the win.

But as to the Worst call ever? Nah.. there have been many others that are probably worse then this one. This one probably wouldn't even make the top 50.

As for the "worst" call, you have to factor the impact of the call.
This was game 1 of the season, for two teams that are not expected to make the playoffs this year.

One team, that has won a total of 2 games in 2 years, and another that just can't figure out what in the world is going on..

(And yes, I pretty much bleed blue and orange)

Very bad call on that play. Player had control of the ball while knee, thigh and buttock hit the ground. He then used his hand to hit the ground with the ball to acknowledge his touchdown and for that the mucky muck ruled he lost control of the ball! Cost the Lions the game. Very bad call.

Did anyone see NBC just now? The call was correct, by the rule in place, and interpreted correctly.

I think most folks who have heard the rule read (or read it themselves) agree the rule was interpreted correctly... though some probably don't want to admit it.

It's just one of those rules that needs some tweaking by the committee.

It's interesting how they got rid of the force-out rule a couple of seasons ago to get rid of a place where referee's unduly could affect a game with a judgment call... then they have a rule like this one in place that creates a completely unnecessary level of burden on an official to even have to make this kind of call.
