I've been lurking for the last couple of weeks and thought that I better register to thank everyone. All of you have put some really good info here that helped me make my decision.

After 10+ years on dish I have 3 days left on my current paid account then I get Direct on Friday.

I think that I should have listened to my big brother a long time ago and left dish out in the cold.

I left Dish after 5 years, I am going to paying more for lets see

1. Much better HD pic
2. NHL center- pretty much all games in HD
3. Better international channel
4. Hardly any disuptes

Why not? 20-30 bucks a month is well worth it, thats nothing to me, thats like losing a few hands at the casino.

Dish sucks period, only good for people who dont care for sports or busy as hell and no time for TV.

... or for people who watch AMC, BBCA, Cooking, DIY, E!, G4, ID, History Int'l, HLN, Lifetime Movie, TCM and about 20 others.

I must have a different Dish Network than you guys because I can't tell any difference between Dish HD and DirecTV HD. And Dish SD is significantly better since it's MPEG-4. Last time I checked, Dish had way more international content as well. But you are correct that I don't care about sports and don't have much time for TV.

But back to the OP's original point, DirecTV is great for sports fans and is nearly free of disputes. Their DVR is much better too.

I just left Dish this week for Directv too! I typically don't have a lot of time for TV but when I want to watch I want to watch something I want. Thats why I LOVE my DVR's (dish or direct) Now with Direct's whole home system its even better you can watch anything in any room.... Last night I was watching both Monday night Football... Baseball.... as well as recording Dancing with the stars for my wife...... Even had room for one more show!!!! while we could have done this before we would not have been able to jump in and out of all of those shows from the same TV! We actually watched tv together in the same room!! Oh, and the NFL sunday ticket was great! I had always felt I'd never pay that much for it but figured I'd check it out on the new customer deal..... Well, still not sure I'd spring that much, but maybe considering it.....

I just switched from dish also.

There are a couple HD channels I miss, like g4 and amc, but not a huge deal. Love the new HR24. I got a h23 upstairs on my other tv and using the MRV setup. Kind of wish the non DVR receivers had a least a small buffer for pausing tv.

No issues so far.

I too was with dish for 10 years!!! The main reason I even started looking to leave... they were unwilling to give me their new HD dvr the vip 922 for the same deal they were offering new customers. I didn't even know about Directv's new whole home service.... I was considering Uverse because of their whole home system but it is not available to my residence yet. Because Dish treated me poorly they caused me to start looking for alternatives. My whole story is here on this site:

http://www.dbstalk.c...633#post2612633

Funny thing the Directv whole home system suites me way better than Dish's system, and I would have been on a new 24 month commitment. And Stuck with them without my whole home system!!

Plus running 3 hd dvr's with Dish at $17 extra per DVR That would be an additional $34 running just 3 receivers. Every way I have run the numbers based on 4 hd receivers with at least 2 of them being hd dvr's I come up with negligible price differences unless you are the basic package on both companies. For the configurations of both programming and equipment I found the pricing to be within 5% of each other......

I was running a vip 622, vip 722. Only 2 hd feeds. I have been needing an additional hd feed but doing with out. monthly cost with no promotions. $105. (america's top 250)

I'm now running 2 hr 24's and 2 h 24's Thats 4 HD feeds and any of the outlets can watch any of the recorded shows. After all programming promotions run out I will be paying $95 per month, for as similar programing as possible to what I was getting with dish. (Choice Ultimate)

Just in case, you might want to not do that yet in case your install doesn't happen for whatever reason.

See post My Setup for configuration info.

My account is paid through toay. I am dropping dish no matter what.
I can go without tv for a few days.
After the current Fox/Dish problems I do not know who to belive.
And I am tired of paying dish 152.00 a month for service.
After the Direct specials drop after 12 months my bill will only go up to 127.

x2

I'm going to let the DirecTV installer pull the dish down after I verify I have the receivers I requested.

WOW! I thought D* was high. I actually considered moving to Dish a year or so ago. Billing issues with D*. But I moved to HD with D* never looked back.

From what I can tell they are both expensive, but Dish has a reputation of leaving their customers high and dry during their so called tough negotiations. They claim to be so much cheaper than direct but when you compare similar programing along with similar equipment they equal out.

Since they are both virtually the same price (similar equipment/programing) Why is it direct can afford to pay FOX yet Dish cannot afford it and they yank your programing???

How much HD content (not stretched or up converted but true 720p or 1080i HD) is actually shown on Cooking, DIY, E!, G4, ID, History Int'l, HLN, AMC, and BBCA channels?

To be fair a lot of channels are showing upconverted along with actual HD content. The service providers (Dish, DirecTV, Cable, etc) have no control over what the broadcaster provides for content.

IMHO, it's a moot point. Almost all new content is HD and that's all that matters to me. It's just a fact of life that pre HD content will be upconverted in some way and broadcast and it will be that way for a long long time. Unless of course someone expects broadcasters quit showing programs older than ten years or so. ;)

Since it costs 2.4¢ to produce a penny, my 2¢ worth is really 4.8¢ worth.  That 4.8¢ is my own and not the 4.8¢ of DIRECTV, Dish, or anyone else for that matter.
