My account is paid through toay. I am dropping dish no matter what.
I can go without tv for a few days.
After the current Fox/Dish problems I do not know who to belive.
And I am tired of paying dish 152.00 a month for service.
After the Direct specials drop after 12 months my bill will only go up to 127.


I called dish last night at 9pm to cancel my account.
I got the standard "you are a valued customer,we want to keep you speech" until I had to lie and say that I already had new service installed. 30 sec. later my girlfriend said that the picture went out and there was a "smart card not auth." on the screen.
I guess they decided not to waste any more time on me, so much for being a valued customer.

My guess is they're getting very good at canceling accounts right now.....

Noon - 4 today.
I removed all of the old (4+ years) coax and the dish this morning by the time that my GF had breakfast ready.

Thank God I got my DECA/SWM WHDVR Service all Upgraded because with more and more Dish Defectors coming to Directv along with others wanting WHDVR they are running out of equipment.

For me the timing is just right.
My last 2 year commitment was up yesterday.
I have been comparing prices for the last several months.
Dish has been going $5 - $10 a month here and there.
The current Fox/Dish mess sealed the deal for me.

I'm curious what you thought would happen when you cancelled service? Of course your signal was going to die. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the timing.

I cancelled Dish on Tuesday after 14 years. They tried to entice me to stay by offering me 3 free months of HBO. LOL. She was winding up with all the reasons switching to DTV was a bad idea until I explained that the DTV service was already installed (which it was). She asked if I was under contract and of course I was. At that point the conversation only lasted about 20 more seconds.

Have fun! I hope your install goes well. Experiences seem to be a bit all over the map. I've had nothing but excellent installers over the 15 years I've been with D*. My wife, who isn't much into the the Dish vs. D* thing, actually broke out laughing when a Dish commercial came on last night. I've only heard that derisive a laugh a hand full of times in our 35 years together (fortunately).:)

She is very pleased with the programming we subscribe to, and the functionality of her own DVR. She got quite a kick out of the whole system when I began playing content from her DVR (and my two as well) in our bedroom on an H21-200 receiver.(Whole Home DVR setup).

While I can find plenty of things to nit pick about, overall, the service has been outstanding for the duration. It ain't the cheapest, but it is, in my experience, the very best comprehensive viewing choice. (and I also have NetFlix, which I dearly love, but the video quality isn't anywhere close to what DirecTV offers).

The combo of good programming, excellent equipment in terms of reliability and functionality, along with the wide variety of choices available when coupled with NetFlix makes for an ideal viewing environment.

I hope you enjoy your D* experience as much as we have.

...and if you have access to broadband (at least 3.5 Mbps), consider NetFlix instead of D*'s premium channels, as it is a much better deal, including as many Blu-Rays as you can get back and forth per month in the mail. At our location, we can easily do 6 a month and all the streaming content is a big plus.

So, you think you were not a "valued customer" because you called, asked for service to be turned off, and they did it?

Personally, I've had service with both Dish and D* over the years. Both have been fine. I liked DISH for their more reasonable pricing (given my specific programming needs), greater flexibility in programming (DISH had HD only options with JUSt the channels I watch - and D* does not), and at the time of the install I felt their equipment options were superior. I really liked the VIP722 DVR I had (although I felt it was a huge downgrade from TIVO) and found the support to be excellent. Everytime I called with a problem, it was immediately addressed without me having to go through some annoying phone menu.

I switched back to D* because Dish's HD coverage on Center Ice was miserable. I was very worried about the move because I figured the HR24 would not match up to the VIP. I was wrong about that one - I actually like the HR24 quite a bit more than I liked the VIP (although still not as much as I liked my old DirecTIVO boxes) despite missing a few of the VIP's features. The HD content on Center Ice has been excellent, and the overall picture quality and performance is superb. For me, its been a great move. I can't imagine that I'd want to go back to DISH and wish I had made the move earlier.

I think either provider can be a good choice, depending on your individual needs. Competition between the two has led to some nice DVR options and great programming choices.

I just wish D* would get AMC (or amc as I see it now) switched to HD before October 31st (when Walking Dead premiers).

I think you'll be really surprised by the HR24. I like mine much better than I liked my DISH VIP.

I've had DirecTv for at least 15 years, and I've never regretted it. When I 1st got DTV my area didnt even have digital cable, so I was switching from 60 analog, garbage, cable channels to 200 + satellite channel goodness. It was awe inspiring the 1st time I turned the TV on after the installer left. "An onscreen guide?!?!? Holy sh*t!!!" lol.

In all the years I've had DTV I have never once seriously thought of switching. Hell, even when I was working for Cox cable I STILL kept DTV even though they gave me cable 4 free. Im a HUGE football fan so Sunday Ticket is a must. 1st Sunday I turned that on was even more awe inspiring, lol. Better assortment of HD channels IMO, there are a few like AMC that I would love to have, but overall I prefer DTVs lineup. And now Im buying a 3d plasma on Tuesday so having 4 3d channels (1 VoD) is something I very much appreciate. Every serious 'TV guy' and/or sports fan I know has DirecTv. Not saying there is anything wrong with Dish. If ur happy with it, who am I to say u shouldnt keep it, but DTV all the way 4 me.

Abnd whats up with all these 'disputes' Dish seems to have? No FX?!? WTF?!?!? Although I do remember the VS debacle that DTV had, not sure if Dish went through the same thing with them. It just seems like Dish has had, and continues to have, these weird disputes. I could be wrong, but thats just how it seems 2 me.

P.S. I just want to throw this in though. Im not a homer. I luv DTV, but not so much that I blindly defend them no matter what decision they make like some people do. I cant stand that. Some people, and you know who you are. Although you may be in denial so let me rephrase that, WE know who you are. Sometimes I read stuff that is just ridiculous. You can be a 'DirecTv' guy without being a complete butt kissing, blindly ridiculously loyal fanboy. Not saying it makes you a bad person but c'mon, the only 1 in this universe that doesn't make mistakes is God himself. And DTV isnt God :) ::this isnt directed at any1 in particular::

domingos, I hope you are not insinuating that I am lying..... I have just learned some additional information.... first let me remind you that my current situation started with a service call (as I had stated in my first post) dealing with signal loss and that is what started this whole thing about the Vip 922.

When I called to question a recent service call on my Final statement (I viewed it online), the CS agent at one point said "I see that you canceled and re-connected your service on the same day back in July of 2009." We discussed that a bit, but I don't understand why that issue back in July of 2009 is relevant other than the fact that both times it dealt with an incompetent Service Tech being dispatched to my house that was unqualified and un-capable of working on my roof. I think somehow Dish thought I was going to re-consider and re connect again. They were wrong though because this time when I called to cancel I already had Directv up and running in my home. Again I did not learn of their 15 month old note until After I cancelled and called them back to dispute the final charges.

Here is why the July 2009 incident occurred. (if you're not interested in that part you can skip that paragraph)

In July of 2009 I had my roof replaced in doing so the roofers removed my dish (as expected) I was particular to make sure they simply un bolted it from the roof and placed it on my deck with all the wires still connected. When the first service tech showed up to my house ( I was not at home I was working that day) the dish tech decided he was going to relocate my dish to the lower edge of my roof. I can tell you the signal will not clear the tree line at that location. When I got home the installer had the dish mounted at the edge of my roof and the wires that feed from the satellite were cut! YES he CUT the wires. At this point he could not complete the install because he would not climb up my roof which is either a 10 or 12 pitch and 3 stories tall on the back side. (I don't blame him I don't go up on roofs like that anymore either) I was very explicit in explaining to Dish when I made the service appointment that I needed a tech who could work on this type of roof. After dish sent me 3 YES THREE techs who could not fix this problem, I was so frustrated I actually cancelled my service. Later that afternoon I called them back and this time while I was talking to one of their customer retention specialists, I agreed to reconnect as long as I incurred no additional commitment and did not have to pay any additional service calls. (I had always subscribed to the home protection plan) Even though I always paid the for the Home protection plan I still had to pay for my dish to be reconnected due to the roof replacement! I guess I should have told them it just fell off in a storm! So they finally sent a tech who was able make this whole situation right. Now fast forward 15 months.

I believe with that note being held in my record it has something to do with their willingness or ability to adjust the new customer offer to my account. Even with my previous issue I am dumbfounded at their unwillingness to retain a 10 year customer and get that customer under another 2 year contract!

However, Now that I have been using Directv's whole house system for about a week now. I can say It is FAR SUPERIOR to anything dish has. I have not missed dish one bit!!

Here is the ironic thing. Had dish just treated me fairly I would right now have a vip 922 in addition to my vip 622 and 722. I would be paying an additional $17 per month for the extra hd dvr and stuck with them for another 2 years, just for the extra receiver.

Instead I now have TWO HR24's plus TWO H 24's That is FOUR HD TV signals AND they all can share the recorded programing to any location. Plus with my current SWM switch I can add up to 2 more HD receivers that can also share the 2 DVR's I currently have. And get this...... each HD receiver is only an additional $5 per month. NOT $10 or $17 like dish charges.

So back to the ironic part Dish actually did me a favor by making me look elsewhere, their loss is my gain. :lol: Another plus.... I get my FX channel back, I now get ESPN U in HD, and I don't have to deal with Dish's periodic public negotiations games they play that come at the customers expense.

It might actually be worth standing by dish and their negotiating tactics if they actually passed the savings on to the customer but with ridiculous DVR fees like $17 per month for a HD DVR, and charging more for HD receivers than regular receivers, and then having the nerve to go on TV and state they don't charge more for HD and their HD is free for life..... and making the analogy to color tv not costing more back in the day.....Its all just very deceiving because they are getting their HD fee in the form of charging more per month for each HD receiver than a SD receiver :nono:

Ok I'm off my soap box for now.... Sorry this post is long, but I just don't like being called a liar and while I can certainly accept that domingos35 may not have meant it that way, it does leave the question out there. And since this other piece of information just came to light I thought I'd share it.

Bottom line here is I'm enjoying HD TV better now as a Directv customer than I was a week ago as a Dish customer, and for LESS money!!!

Ok about the same amount of Money because plus or minus 10% really is negligible. Especially if you like the product/service better.

that truly is the whole story and it is accurate, you can choose to believe it or not.... what I don't understand is how you can jump to a conclusion when you have NO first hand knowledge of my experience and both of our experiences with Dish are nothing like each other.
