Does anyone know if the physical dimensions of the HR20, 21, 22 ,23 are the same at least from the same maker? in my case a 700 series.

Curious idea I thought of earlier, I have an HR20-700 currently torn apart awaiting caps for a power supply repair. I was wondering if the top panel and front panel from a broken 21, 22 or 23 700 series would fit onto this?

I kind of like the black case more, but i like that my HR20 has ATSC tuners built in and is generally regarded as being faster than the 21 22 and 23 boxes. Wouldn't it be nice to have the best of both =)

I am not 100% sure about the size,

But I do know that the case for the HR20-700 had a significant amount of ventilation holes in the top, that wasn't repeated on the HR21,22, 23 models.

I also think the side ventilation is different between the different series as well.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Yes it would. But, since these are leased boxes, I wouldn't take the chance. Why? Because you might have to send it back.

Well its an owned box, and ive already opened it to make the power supply repair. My thought was to keep an eye out on ebay for a broken black box being sold as parts/junk.

And honestly even if it wasnt an owned box, directv can bite me. id still crack it open to do the repair because i dont want to loose access to the 1TB of recordings on my external drive which would happen with getting a new box, not to mention probably be pretty hard to get an HR20 for the ATSC tuners these days.

However the issue with ventilation seems like it could be a problem

Have you thought about spraying the case black?

I have seen most of the models out there and they are few and far between that would match up without modifications.

I did open an R22-200 and HR21-200 last night and they are identical down to the HR21 board inside (except the hard drive brand).

I have an HR23-700 at the house along with an HR20-700. I will check it out and see if they would swap internals without drilling too many holes.

I had thought of the spray paint route, but it would probably turn out like c**p

Im not even necessarily thinking of swapping the boards between chassis, wondering if the front panel would snap onto another model and would the top cover slide on in place of the originals.

Even the front panel alone would be cool, i mean you really don't see the rest of the case when its in a cabinet

Maybe using a flat or satin finish instead of gloss would make the finish easier to do and look okay.

Well, it looks like a complete swap wouldn't be easy. Possible sure, but not easy.

You might be able to swap faceplates though, I might mess with that later.

The HR20-700 case is definitely not the same as the HR21-700, not even close.

+1
I have one of each, the ventilation is totally different and the HR20 would most likely overheat.

Since OTA is unique to the HR20, the back plate is different too.

Yeah i understand the back plate being different. and can see ventilation being an issue now too, unless one were to really void any warranty by cutting a hole in the back to mount a fan lol.

So i guess we just move on to are the face plates interchangeable?

And im talking face plates from one -700 to another -700. Would make sense that mounting/locking tabs, cable feed thru location, pinout of the cable etc would be different between manufactures. Here's hoping that Pace the maker of -700 used the same molds

I'll tear open an HR23-700 later tonight and see if the faceplates have the same connection as the HR20-700 that has been torn apart in my dining room for the past couple weeks

If they match and the mood strikes me I might try swapping them, we will see how today goes :D

Do-able.

But not a direct swap. You can pull it off, but you will need a drill, bits, and a dremel set. Probably a couple bandaids too. It will look factory on the front and sides, but the back panel will look funky. I didn't try swapping the plates to make sure they are compatible, but you could figure it out if you are handy with a meter and possibly a soldering iron.

Good luck, take your time, and please post some pics of the results. :)

Nice, have to keep an eye out for a broken one on ebay and see what i can do with it.

FYI my repair to the power supply on my HR20-700 was successful. Got the 2 caps last night and swapped them and everything's working again!

So if anyone has an HR20-700 making a high pitched noise or not powering on, crack the box open and check the grouping of caps between the front of the unit and the transformer. In my case the 2 1000uf 16v caps on the 12v rail had poped. $1.30 for parts and $1.90 for shipping and about an hr of work and I have a working box again =)

Funny thing is these 2 caps look like they were a cheap POS part to begin with. Almost all the other caps inside the box are rubycon which is a good brand, these 2 caps had no brand marking. They must have ran out on the assembly line and substituted whatever cheap crap they could find

My particular box also has a few more of these no name caps over by the analog AV outputs, probably being used as some kind of filtering for the analog outs. I didn't replace those, they still looked good, and i doubt they get stressed as much as filtering caps in the power supply.

Great that you were able to repair it, but I'm certain that most people (even many of those that would know how) would simply ship it back and go with a new one. Your situation is rare (although the "saving programs" part would be a desire for many/all people).

As for case swap? Good luck with that. I'm pretty sure the bezel is different enough to be a problem on the HR20 chassis. The cover might kinda fit but I can't remember if the holes are in the same place or not. and I can't even remember if the depth of the boxes are the same (that would be the killer).

Seems like a whole lot of work for what amounts to an aesthetic change. Personally I'd classify this as a "can't have it both ways" situation and move on.

I was looking closer at this today and I think the HR20 is just a tiny bit deeper, the board may not fit after all.

The holes don't line up for the front bezel, that is why you need the dremel tool. :D
