got a replacement for my -100 thru the PP and wow this machine is loud. the drive makes a 'marbles' noise at regular intervals, i dont know how else to describe it...maybe more like a vibrating fan or perhaps a water wheel on an oldtime humidifier circling

it's even sitting on top of my hdtivo, which has a very loud secondary fan and i can hear the -700 even over the tv volume. would they make a housecall and give me a quieter machine? :) or do we just all have to live with annoying whirring?

oh it also said the wholehouse beta has ended, so i guess someone else had that. I dont.

Sounds like you got a refurbished receiver that wasn't really refurbished. I'd call up and see if they can send you a replacement. Any replacement receiver has a 90 day warranty, although since you have the PP that's not really an issue. If it is loud enough to hear over the phone, I would make sure the CSR hears it when you talk to them. :)

Today's problems don't worry me, I haven't solved yesterday's yet.

This has happened before as it seems they do miminal examination of the DVR and then send it back out to another unsuspecting customer.

ok per your advice i called and he was super nice and offered replacement or a call, i was initially gonna do the call to have the tech out here to swap then thought , wait, the replacement may even arrive before i have time off to have a tech out so said send it out. he commented that something may be wrong with 'their system' that i keep losing drives but i said no, this drive is working, but it sounds terrible, like something is grinding. and not even my crashed drive made this noise.

i really think it may just be a poorly mounted fan, i've had this happen on my PC where it came loose but since we arent allowed to open these, i cant check. Plus maybe it really is the hard drive. i had a friend listen to it over the phone and she said it's very noticeable but the CSR didnt take me up on the offer to listen to it.

my guess is thursday night ill have it in hand. he said comparable receiver so my guess is another hr20. i know thats pretty rare from what i've read on here

The HR20-700 replacement I got was a lot quieter than the original one I bought at Circuit City when they first came out.

You will get anything from a HR20 to a HR24. Most likely it was a loose fan or an issue with the harddrive. Either way, it needs to be replaced.

i can confirm it's the HD. when i went to watch my 1st program and did FF, the drive sounded very sick. I just pity the guy that gets it next unless they actually replace it. drives are so cheap these days they should just toss in new ones every time :)

also i'm disappointed the 700 doesnt have RF, my sensor broke on my 100 a few years ago and i was looking forward to using it again.

maybe i should have told him i dont need OTA and i would have gotten an hr24 :)

Do you mean RF as in RF for the remote control? I have two HR20-700s that have RF remote control capability. You might want to check yours again.

One of my HR20-700s has a loud vibration that cycles on and off from time to time. I found when lightly pressing down on the top of the case it stopped and then later found lifting one of the feet up (with a pad) about 3mm stabilized the chassis and the sound has not returned.

All 3 of my HR20-700 sound like they are gnawing on their discs and have since new. Placement in cabinetry can amplify this or reduce it depending...

maybe i have RF and IR confused lol. I do that sometimes. the 700 doesnt have a place to put on the antenna from the 100. a while ago 'one of them' died on the 100 and i had to switch the remote to the other setting to keep it working. then after i while the remote was acting weird so i called for a new one they mailed me a new remote but it was an RC 64 and didnt work. I needed a 64R because the other setting didnt work on the 100.

so i just muddled my way thru using my old 64R

i notice the new 700 has a 65R

Yea even my overclocked computer cpu (Q9550 2.8GHZ overclocked to 3.65GHZ) runs at 30C and the hot GTX 275 graphics card runs at 40C compared to the Directv HR 20-700 running at about 53C.
Crazy, but it still works.

HR2x series DVRs averaged below 120 degrees for years now....except for the original HR20's which tended to run in the upper 120's.

Operating temperatures are also impacted by their environment - ventilation, surround other equipment, etc.

I've stabilized the temps on my multiple HR2 HD DVRS and H2x HD receivers all below 120 degrees and none lower than 112 degrees. Those are very normal ranges.

As for drive noise...often this is the first sign of drives simply going bad.

Normal temp ranges for the 20-700 is from 123-127.

Not with the 20-700s. Something happened a while ago that caused the 20-700s with Seagate drives to start that horrible seeking noise. It varies in volume, but it always seems to be there, even when using WD EADS and EVDS drives internally. With the WD drives, you have to put your ear to the top of the 20-700, but that seeking noise is still there.

I had one owned 20-700 that came with a noisy stock internal and I put a 1.5TB Seagate Cuda in it and it was still terribly noisy. I swapped it for a 24-200 and put the 1.5TB drive on a leased 20-700 in a TT docking station and it is pretty quiet now. I really think that the NRs caused the seeking noise because all my 20-700s were very quiet and then some of them started chattering like crazy squirrels all of a sudden.

The 20-700 has an internal RF antenna. Try putting it in RF, it will work. Of course, you will need the RF remotes which you have. The 64R and the 65R.

ok i activated it and i got an error on odd 103 but we checked signals while on the phone and they looked ok. She said this happens tons of times every day..then when off the phone i went to all the test channels and all was OK...funny thing is, no channels below 80 were in the guide, i went to all channels i receive but couldnt even see the channels to check them....rebooting now so hopefully i'm just missing something silly

so far i dont notice any hard drive noise

edit yes , fixed it, the channels are there!

...now watching my 1st show and when i FF i do hear the drive but it's not as bad as the last one. But never heard the drive on the 100 model. oh well.
