Saved close to 1000 bucks by not having it,not saying i had no problems but just figuring out how to deal with it.Also i have got two one time free courtesy calls.

Just remember this, leasing receivers is a win win and owning is a no win.
To each their own. At least if I cancel my service I wont have to worry about getting the recievers back to D* before they charge me an arm and a leg. I will sell mine and make a profit. Not to mention that I will own the models I want and not the ones I dont. You stick to what ever refurb piece of crap D* wants to send you and be happy with it. I am happy to own the recievers I want.
What he said!

Paying someone to do something is one thing. Waiting 8 weeks for them to do it is something else. My Slimline isn't on the roof, it's on an old Primestar pole on the ground that the previous owners of my house left in place, so I'm safely on the ground when servicing my setup. Any parts I need, I buy from Solid Signal, ebay, etc., and they deliver much faster than 8 weeks. So if you live in a city where D* can send someone to you within 48 hours, that makes PP more attractive. Out here in "flyover country" they aren't so fast to reply and that makes PP less attractive.

It doesn't offend me but if this offends you then so be it.

If you are so Cheap that you risk going up onto a roof to replace an LNB when I don't even know how then I just hope you don't fall off of the roof like a friend of mine did and lost his job and was out of work for 4 years while they tried to mend his body and he had lots of nerve damage.

I don't tune my car I take it to a mechanic and if I need medical treatment I go to a Specialist called a Doctor.

I don't know what you do for a living but everyone has their skills and I pay those who know what they are doing and are good at it to do the things that I either can't do or don't want to do!!!

I'll agree with that!!! And I can usually fix just about anything, but I'd rather pay somebody to do that.

You don't need to have the protection plan to have a qualified service techinician do the work for you.

To OP, I think you should consider it the same as the Dish protection plan. If you used that and found it to be useful and worth the money, you would probably feel the same about this one. My question as a new switcher, is do they let you buy into the plan even after you need it? Dish let you do that so it seemed pointless to pay every month for it.

Generally, there's a 30 day waiting period, but sometimes they'll waive the tech fee, or discount it. There also is a penalty to cancel the plan within the first year.

Interesting... With dish you could add the $5 plan and remove it without a fee after I believe 5 months. Or you could pay the $20 penalty and remove it any time. So basically no repair should cost you more than $25 if you "gamed the system" correctly. With 30 day wait and a year requirement it would make it more difficult.

I've got the protection plan because I'm 80 years old and quit climbing on the roof about ten years ago. I've had two dish realignments and one receiver replacement in three years. It's well worth the extra cost to me.

I planned for the future. I mounted mine on a pole next to the house, just in case. Ive realigned mine once so far. So much easier standing on the ground :) Now if I could figure out a way to mount my OTA antennas on the ground and have them still work, I would be good to go :)

Eleven years with d* never had and never needed it and if i had to pay out of the pocket for a repair i will still be way ahead of the game.

That would have cost you around $120.00 ($49/alignment, $20 for receiver) without the plan. In 3 years you paid roughly $210.00 for the plan.

Come live in Central NJ and try to find a D* technician. I've seen one so far, the rest barely qualify as installers.

$90 for three years peace-of-mind is well spent, IMHO. :)

You can add electric line failure to those. Because for every time the electric overhead wire has broken on my road, I have lost a receiver and I have a whole home surge protector. So far this has happen three times. You think those wires are one piece, but they're not. They're spliced like crazy. Now when I see 'em slagging, I'm on the phone complaining to the util. Like all utils, they don't come out for maintenance. So after 24 hours, I call the PSC. (That our NYS government complaint bureau for utils.)
