So am I correct that KQED-HD PBS for the Bay Area is not currently uplinked but right now it's repeater KQET-HD for the Monterey market is, though hidden, maybe only for testing?

You are correct. Perhaps DISH will notice and map the feed to both markets? (It looks like the transponder, 129 13s32, physically covers both areas.)

They only mapped the main NJN PBS station WNJB in HD to the NY spot despite only needing to repeat the same feed once for the rest of the state; programming doesn't differ between WNJB and the rest of the repeaters on WNJT, WNJN and WNJS. Since there's only the New York and Philly spotbeams for the state, once on each mapped to the local channels should do it.

At least, one would think.

I may have missed it, but this week WEDH PBS in Hartford is now only available in HD. (At least on my receiver....)

You are correct. Perhaps DISH will notice and map the feed to both markets? (It looks like the transponder, 129 13s32, physically covers both areas.)

This is somewhat crazy in a sense that the small and short market Monterey-Salinas is getting so many HD stations, while San Francisco, its neighbor to the north, is still not even getting PBS in HD. However, can Dish actually legally share the KQET signal with the San Francisco market? Is this actually a repeater at all times of KQED? It identifies itself as KQET, as opposed to KQED, although most or all of the programming is mirrored. It also has a studio at Cal State Monterey Bay.

It also has a second subchannel which identifies itself as a repeater of KTEH.

I note that Monterey-Salinas also has KSMS uplinked in HD, but not available. Once KQET and KSMS are made available, that market will only be one station short of all HD on Dish.

I'm not sure how that would work out for a non-comm. From your description it sounds like they are engineered separately and KQET isn't just a repeater. KQET is licensed as a full power station (not a translator).

KMCE ... which is an Azteca affiliate. They may not be broadcasting in HD.

It looks like Monterey will be one of the markets counting toward the 30% of markets with all stations offered HD carriage next February. DISH would have to set aside a HD channel for KMCE as well (just in case they go HD, if they are not already transmitting HD).

KQET, KQED, and KTEH are all owned by Northern California Public Broadcasting. I do not believe that KQET is a repeater. It does not retransmit the KQED logo and it identifies itself separately, although the schedules do largely mirror each other. KQET does have a subchannel that is just a repeater of KTEH.

I am not sure if KMCE is broadcasting in HD.

The Monterey market, because it is small and Dish was already carrying its network affiliates in HD, is a logical choice to be one of the 30 percent going all HD by February. Dish doesn't have to add very many more stations to make the Monterey market all HD. Plus, with Direct as far as I know having no plans to take Monterey HD, Dish can dominate that market as far as satellite carriage goes.

Nevertheless, I do share the frustration of some of the posters that San Francisco, the major market just to the north of Monterey, appears to have fallen behind in HD stations, with no PBS stations carried in HD. It seems as if Dish is ceding the San Francisco market to Direct and cable.

I think The Monterey market is different DMA because it has KSBW (NBC) and a CBS station.
