This thread should answer your questions as to when a commitment is created...

You said "purchased." You can't purchase something you don't own, i.e. something that is leased.

Purchased receivers not supplied by direct WILL start a new commitment. Have done that several times, and theres no way around it, for brand new receivers anyway, dont know about old junk ones.

Not to burst your bubble.....

But no purchased IRD can cause a contract to begin.

for example, here is a nice, new, shiny HDDVR that you can own, turn on and off at your convenience and never incur a contract extension. http://www.weaknees....500-details.php

The only way to get yourself into a new contract is to upgrade with a LEASED IRD.... that includes any your LEASE from an authorized dealer.

Next he's going to tell us it's impossible to own any current piece of equipment, it's all leased...

Someone once told me "learn your craft." If you are going to do something as a job, learn the details and do it properly or move on to something else.

I purchased an R22 from Matt over a year ago. It's still running just fine. It did not re-up my contract when activated. Check the classifieds here, or PM Matt. He usually has something laying around. Better than bidding and losing or buying from an untrusted source on E-Bay.

How does one get a HR24 that is owned? Wasn't the HR20 the only MPEG4 DVR on the market prior to all receivers being activated being leased (In Q1 of 2006 or 2007 iirc?).

Not doubting, just haven't investigated it enough and knowing what those fine, never in error, D* reps tell you on the phone......

My guess would be that most of the owned units were protection plan replacements of other owned units.
