I got the dreaded Hard Drive Failure message last Thursday on my VIP 722 and dish shipped out a new one after going through the steps of reset/unplugging the unit. Before I packaged the old unit I opened up the front panel to check to see if the smart card was there with it and i could not find one, just an empty slot. I plugged in the unit old unit just to see if I could get a "Please Insert Smart Card" message but all I got was acquiring signal message. So I checked System Information and it listed the Receiver # and the Smart Card # on the screen. I looked throughout my house and still no sign of one so I decided that the card was internal and just mailed it out today since my ride to Parkersburg, WV from Southeast Ohio to the nearest Fedex facility to take return labels.

By the way I have no clue what the problem is with the old 722. When I plugged it back in for the smart card issue I decided just for fun to view my DVR recordings on the drive and for some reason the hard drive wasn't failing anymore and I was able to view my recordings/watch my recordings. So when it makes it back to DISH's warehouse in Spartansburg, SC they could have a DVR that works. About a week before the failure messages I noticed the receiver was running a little hot at a high temp of 138, and an average temp of a 125 and it was almost impossible for my cousin and I to use TV1 & TV2 simultaneously without freeze ups, crashes, etc.

Sorry about the length of the post. :)

722's can have either an embedded (internal) chip, or an external card, so it's normal for there to not be a card in the door.

It does vary by receiver model whether or not it has/can have the internal/external smart card (we have a list)

Sorry that your receiver went out (temporarily I guess ;)), if you need anything let us know
