Does the HDMI out on the 622 transmit both the HD video as well as the 5.1 audio? Is a digital optical or connection necessary for 5.1 audio?

The original poster asked if the HDMI connection would do hd video as well as 5.1 Dolby audio. The answer to his question is yes.

In your case; it seems that you are breaking off the 5.1 by use of a toslink cable since your A/V receiver either doesn't have HDMI incorporated or you don't have an HDMI input available.

Either method gets what you want accomplished.

You are correct. Either way will work depending on your equipment.
